I do. In fact, I was surprised they went for AAI instead of AS.

By the way, are you guys getting robo call notified whenever a trip is assigned? Sometimes I do but most of the time I don't. |

I'm just going to throw this out there. SWA is still in the thick of it with the AirTran merger, but does anyone else see them stepping out of left field to make a merger play with Alaska?
The fleets line up relatively well, it helps to get SWA closer to an "international presence", and it would be a huge blow to both AMR and DAL. Logistically, I don't think it will be a walk in the park, especially considering the sluggish rate of the current merger/integration, but I definitely see SWA attempting to make a play for either SWA, or possibly JB in the future. I haven't looked at their financials closely, but I figure they could probably afford to make a play like that. I've heard that the ALK brand loyalty in the Northwest is unquestionably strong, so whomever decides to merge with them will need to work extremely hard to keep that customer loyalty. Yes, because SWA would do a wonderful job of preserving the AS culture, product and brand loyalty you keep crowing about.

I've always imagined that looking at Alaska was like the final scene from The Good The Bad and The Ugly:D

From the weekly trim tab....
folks wanted to know about Delta’s relationship with Alaska in light of the airline’s recent code-share announcement with American. Alaska, as you know, is an important partner for Delta, and Alaska traffic facilitates feed to our international flights, particularly out of SEA to Asia. With that said, Delta is planning to explore using more of the Delta network up and down the West Coast this summer. In fact, this week we announced LAX – Spokane service using a regional jet to serve the route. And we’ll begin SEA-Anchorage service soon with mainline jets. Look for more announcements about increased seasonal service on the West Coast in the coming weeks. 1. How much is done on mainline vs Skywest for example. 2. If it's all just seasonal flying and/or utilizing airplanes that would otherwise be sitting on the ground. 3. Whether more routes are added that could directly compete with Alaska. 4. If after adding a handful of routes we retreat like we did with all the added International flying...."We are no longer going to run widebodies from ATL to MCO but rather branching out and taking the world by storm"....until we didn't, circa 2008/9. |
My personal opinion....if Delta is miffed, it's mostly due to the added international partnership between Alaska and Emirates (they have a motherload of airplanes coming online aiming to take over the planet with the capitalization, low tax base and cheap fuel out of Dubai to do it). After all, hasn't Delta management repeatedly justified the Alaska code share with "no need to buy the cows when we are getting milk for free" and all that based primarily on them feeding our growing international gateway at SEA? If the milk is now being shipped off to other vendors that sets a very bad precedent going forward. Maybe Delta launches some experimental flights to gather data and send a signal to Alaska before having a heart to heart with BT at Alaska about what happens next. Information is power. Let's see what happens.

Not everyone wants or can justify the 787, even if it didn't suck right now. But a plug and play 76-ERNG could probably deliver a lot of the cost benefits for a fraction of the additional capex and they would likey sell a ton of them. Especially when and if their state welfare IMEX printing press fantasy money ever dried up and their endless MI-complex money became, well, not so endless.
The duopoly is betting on the whole world paying unlimited amounts of money for cleen sheet 15-20% efficiency designs when they could probably get 10-15% for much lower costs and much higher program reliability. Besides, one of the biggest "advantages" is a longer hull life. Seriously? Does anyone really care? 30 years from now there will be something else anyway so who is going to pay a premium for that now if they don't have to? What I was trying to say is that once Boeing starts delivering the 787 in larger numbers, I would think that many other airlines that have the 767 and 777 will want to sell theirs or trade them in. Then, we can pick up some of those 767s and 777 for cheap. Maybe fly them for 10 years get a lot of use out of a used airframe - one who's MX and operating costs are well understood. Seems to be working well lately around here. |
