When you get displaced into a new aircraft that you have never flown before, what kind of freeze do you have in the new aircraft? What if you're displaced in to an aircraft that you have flown before -- and only require a short course -- is there less of a freeze?

If it's mandatory there is no freeze whether short or long course.

If it's voluntary, it's normal freeze just as if you bid to it. (short is 9 months, long is 2 years) The clock begins on the date of the award, not when you convert.

E.g.- I got the award to the 76 domestic from the md-88 in march 07, but didnt convert until july 1. My freeze ended march 09.

That's my understanding, but as you well know...I've been wrong before. :)

When things were really rolling down south, how often would AE's come out per year? Because they way things are looking right now, a 9 month freeze is not really a problem. :)

They would usually come down about once a quarter.

My MD's have been in the system since before the last bid/displacement. Supposedly all your bids should stay in the system unless you are awarded something (AE, VD, or MD) and then ALL of them are wiped out and you have to re-enter them.

As you know alot of good people get hosed in a displacement. It happened to me in the early 90's and after 9-11. I was in the AF with one of the LAX 800 captains. He is a great guy. I dont think he got displaced fortunately. But you know what? You should come over to the ER in LA when you can. There are alot of us great guys over there too!!!:D

Here is part of what the contract says about category freezes:


G. Category Freeze
1. A pilot who is awarded an AE or VD will incur a 24-month category freeze.
Exception one: A domestic category pilot will incur a 9-month category freeze if:
a. the award is an AE or VD for the same status in an international category, and
b. he requires no qualification training, other than transoceanic ground school
Exception two: Subject to Section 22 G. 1. Exception one b., a pilot currently under a
category freeze may be awarded an AE or VD to the same position at a different base.
Exception three: A B-767/B-757 or a B-767/B-757 (International) pilot who is awarded
an AE or VD in the same status for the B-767-400ER and undergoes B-757/767 to B-
767-400ER qualification training will incur a 9-month category freeze.
Exception four: A B-767-400ER pilot who is awarded an AE or VD in the same status
for the B-767/B-757 or the B-767/B-757 (International) and undergoes B-767-400ER to
B-757/767 qualification training will incur a 9-month category freeze.

This is all the time limits, the rest talks about bypass and being able to ignore the freeze (actually it is added to your capt bid freeze) if you bid from FO to Capt for the first time. To me, reading this, it doesn't matter if you go to "long" or "short" school, if you go to qualification training on anything that is not described above, you have a 24 month freeze on a AE or VD.
