Yeah, thanks. I downloaded the Free one, and when I picked a map to download, it said I only get 5 free maps, so I'll wait until I decide where my next drunken walkabout will be, to download a map for the way home!:D

As an aside, my Android and Google maps using my phone's GPS worked fine in Narita. Not sure if I need this app, since I was 'off line' anyway, Google Maps knew where I was and had the street map.

Cool! Maybe that's why there giving it away now!! I've not tried Google maps overseas in a while now, I'll have to give it a shot next time to see what happens. Cheers!

I just wish it would leave "Bread Crumbs" or some kind of a trail on the map, so I can find my way home at 2am! :D

I hate waiting for sunrise...

Both Google and CityMaps have 'drop a pin'. Just remember to drop one at home base before you go prowling! I just need to figure out how to hook up a two axis auto pilot to a segway and my Iphone, then after the pub..."Home Geeves" :D

Timbo-
GPS pinpoints your location but does not provide any map data. (ie = rivers, lakes, streets, etc.) It is possible for Google maps to "pre-load" a certain limited area using Wi-Fi while you are still in the hotel. Just open the app and scroll around the area a bit. I've done that before. That would be free.
The problem is when you leave the Wi-Fi and then zoom in and out or you walk outside that area. Then you lose map data. You have to either find another Wi-Fi hotspot or turn on your cellular data. That's when the outrageous foreign roaming charges begin.

When using the traditional map apps, cellular data is normally used on the fly as you move around to build the map (street names, etc.) It can get expensive to use roaming cellular data in Europe or Asia for on-line maps like Google Maps, etc.

That is the part you avoid by using CityMaps2Go. The entire map is stored off-line right on your phone. No cellular data needed.

All of them (including CityMaps) use GPS to find your location on the map.
GPS is still free. (at least until the Air Force decides they need revenue)

Thanks CE. My Google Maps has a "Make Available Offline" feature that I use on a layover, because once I leave the USA, I leave my pone in Airplane Mode, so it will only use wifi in the hotels (free). I never get the roaming or data charges.

You and I operate the same way.
No way am I paying those extortion prices over there for data.

FYI, you can turn off data roaming or just shut off cellar data altogether if you still want to use your cell when traveling abroad.

I use the iPhone and just turn cellar data off altogether just to be safe. Last time I traveled abroad I unlocked one of my wife's old cell phones and just bought a SIM card overseas. You can reload it and I found it to be much cheaper than anything I would use through my cell phone provider.

Unlocking it can be a little pricey, but I found or to worth it. Easier to do than you think. Unlockings.com: The Leading Unlocking Site on the Net
