I rode the short bus and am damn proud of it!!

I'm guessing that the ATL LEC (3 of the 4 are new since the TA was approved) are trying to say:

The RAW bucket system is a concession to the Company and reduces staffing needs.

There are some pilots that would like to use the current negotiating leverage in the PWA to try and make the RAW value groupings as large as possible to negate their effect, and undo the concessionary aspect of the RAW system as much as possible.

There are other pilots who would like to shrink the size of the buckets to make reserve more "fair" but that also gives management an enhancement to the "staffing reducing efficiency tool" that RAW offers. Unfortunately, that will actually prolong the need to hire more pilots and could result in pilots staying on reserve even longer.

Timbo: You been keeping up with the America's Cup? Got to see part of a race the other day. Unreal how fast those boats can accelerate and flying by on foils was impressive.

I see this RAW stuff another way given I flew reserve and watched these numbers daily and month to month. Now long before the 717 cut 88 staffing we had 100 reserves on ATL M88 B. we went to the high raw value because people flat out demanded a month off at full pay instead of only fly every other week at full pay. Or if you were senior senior reserve not fly til week 4 because seniority did factor in under the old system except for SC.

Those guys won and the system kicked in and they didn't fly. When the company saw all of the guys with 0 hours and 0 RAW they knew how few people they needed and cut reserve from 100 to 80 guys or less. That way everyone flew constantly even in slow months and that worked like a charm.

To think the month off at 72+ hours will continue is about as short sighted as trip parking and complaining about displacements.

I don't buy whatsoever the notion raw cut staffing. Showing the company you don't need 20 guys helped cut staffing. Blaming the raw system to push seniority only reserve system in order to get a month off at ALV-2 is going to backfire.

That is because you learn the automation in the MD88 but don't dare trust it.

Then you bid the 76 and observe it actually working.

Good transition.

Then you get displaced to the 737 and go "where's the rest of the cockpit??"

No kidding. I come home from every trip with a bruise in really weird places. I bang my head on the overhead panel at least once a trip. And "man touches" are always fun when we both reach to switch frequencies.

It's on property in Delta paint. Some IOE needs to be conducted. I believe it will start revenue service on Sep 17th. Initial route will be ATL EWR.

Yup. If we are allowed to credit 200 hours per month, there will be guys who figure how to do it and then they will do it.

We had this on the C-9 in the Navy a few times (No autopilot) but one time stands out as particularly fun. I was flying as the aircraft Commander and knowing my limitations (a man has got to know his limitations) we asked for, and received, a block altitude for most of the time at cruise. We were flying transcon, San Diego to Norfolk, or perhaps Jacksonville so it was going to be quite tedious.

The other Pilot, also an aircraft commander but flying as a co-pilot that day, was your typical **** hot fighter pilot type, who was generally a better stick and rudder man than myself - so naturally I couldn't pass up this opportunity to humble him a few notches.

We decided to take turns to break up the monotony of hand flying. Unbeknownst to my fellow aviator, I called back to the crew and hatched a devious plan. When ever I was flying everyone would remain seated but when my partner was flying the crew would alternatively move all the way forward wait a few minutes and then move all the way back. We flew with the cockpit door open and our crew chief would pop up see who was flying and then take charge in the back.

It worked like a charm - I was able to trim the aircraft relatively stable, but my buddy was all over the sky. He actually started sweating and was worried he was losing "it." After over an hour of this we finally broke down and told him what was going on - the look on his face was priceless!

Scoop :D
