Johnso, this may come as a complete shock to you, but many of us have been hearing this type of announcement for many more years than you have worked here. This will be about my 4th time in my 28 years working for Delta.
In 1987, we heard Unprecedented Growth! They bought Western. In 1991, we heard Delta would soon be the "World Airline of Choice" they bought Pan Am. In 2001, we heard RJ's are saving Delta, they bought Com Air and ASA. And as soon as Richard showed up at Delta, he said, "I was not brought here to merge with North West." until we did, and the Synergy has been outstanding; 7+5=10. That is what Capacity Discipline got us. This kind of happy talk has preceded a merger in just about every case. So like I said, bring on Hawaiian! So you're claiming that growth has never happened at Delta, and you've reached 777CA simply be attrition? You're claiming that all announcements of growth have never come true? Or are you simply saying you're a guarded individual? Because it's ok to be a guarded individual. But to constantly insist all your negative claims will come true, while also claiming no good announcements will come to fruition, is hypocritical at best. Especially when Delta has grown in the past. |

The landscape has changed and continues to do so. |

Someone on the DALPA web board pointed out that the term "fleet renewal" is commonly used to decrease overall fleet age. New aircraft could do that without eliminating old aircraft.
You can renew a fleet and grow at the same time. |

Capacity discipline refers to more then just mainline. And you didn't say "some" 757s either. Thus far, we know of about 30 or so B757s that will be parked. In total, the rumor is 75 B757s to be parked. So lets say they park 75 B757s, 40 A320s, & all 16 767-300s. That's 131 aircraft being parked. Now, we are accepting delivery of 100 B737-900ERs, 30 A321s, and 10 A330s. That's still a net gain of 9 airplanes. And it doesn't count the MD90s.
But based on what management us telling Wall Street, including what they've filed with the SEC, it'll be much more. |

Question for you guys that have done this stuff: Do you feel a ground effect cushion as you approach the deck at those speeds?
Carl Watch most of the less experienced airshow performers and they'll get a bump at the beginning of a low pass as they adjust for the slightly unusual pitch attitude and control forces as they enter ground effect. You've got to push into it and the aircraft accelerates which causes more of a nose up instability. That's what sets performers like Goulian and Wagstaff apart from the rest of the crowd, IMHO. Just watch their lines and angles. For the jet guys, it is somewhat point and go. But in a 1,100 pound airplane with 350+ Horsepower, a gyro on the front (prop) and as much torque as a small yacht keeping those lines perfect takes incredible skill. Just try to pull off one rolling 360 and you realize, oh damn, that's harder than it looks. Sorry, getting off topic .... Got no idea what the electric aircraft guys feel, if anything other than G's. |

Especially when Delta has grown in the past. The day before 9-11, 2001, Delta had 10,400 pilots on our list. At that time, Delta had 55 L1011's, and 15 MD11's and 8 777's. How many 747's+777's do we have today? Or was that merger considered Growth? All I'm saying is, don't get too spun up over this announcement. Tell me again, when are those new A330's going to be delivered? 2015? Hmm...isn't there something else going on in 2015?? Oh yeah, just in time to negotiate our Next Contract! You don't think we'd want to jeopardize those "Growth Widebodies" do you?? I mean, how about 4,8,3,3 for some more A330's!! If we give up more profit sharing of course! Yee Haw! I think Richard just bought himself some serious negotiating leverage for our next contract. While we play checkers, Richard plays chess. |
