Is it wrong to resent the fact that my employer is finding it appropriate to send me a card, to advise me on how to use my profit-sharing payment? Is it weird to find it even more absurd that they have the nerve to suggest I put it in my 401(k)?

Or is my humility failing me right now?

Timbo, how do you explain the other employee groups not having costs at the top of the industry like the pilots?
There are always some things one group has that another does not. Overall however we do better then most of the other employees. As a example I don't know of any employees getting double pay for overtime.

While what you say might be true, as I sit in the Pullman hotel in CDG for my one awarded international trip a year, I find it pretty disheartening that most of the entire civilized world gets some kind of pay override for working over a major holiday. Why is this industry so different when it is US that are taking plane loads of folks home so that THEY can be with their loved ones, while WE are sitting in a hotel room munching on power bars because the only thing open is a stop and rob or a shwarma place? I am not complaining on one level, because I didn't have to fly this trip, but somebody did, and somebody would have been away from home on straight, or worse yet, reserve pay. And I'll betcha that if only one of the days over a holiday trip paid double, they would go senior. Anyway you try to spin it, it ain't right.

I think... and I am not sure.. but if you use it for your 401k, and you fill it to the 415 limits, you then get paid that excess as regular income, much in the same way you would be getting the profit sharing if you took it as pay. But.. that money would be working for you in the retirement account sooner. There's that old TVM thing again... JMHO, DYODD however....

T,

Personal opinion only, but I think it goes back to the days when we were compensated at a much higher level. Back in those days we did not really need holiday pay since we were already compensated in line with other professionals such as doctors and lawyers.

Well fast forward 15/20 /30 years and guess what? Our compensation has not kept up with other professionals, for numerous reasons beyond the scope of this post, and we never quite pushed the issue of holiday pay.

Maybe the time is now or at least 2016?

Holiday/Super Bowl pay = "Well, at least I get an extra $### for doing this."

Holiday/Super Bowl pay = family: "It's okay, if you get paid extra then it's worth it and we'll [insert plan B]."
