The 717 is the right size, but what have been your observations on fuel burn (assuming you have DC-9 experience) ?
The E175 is 4 generations newer than the 717's type. The long thin routes are going to go there first.
For the record, I voted no and I fought to "capture" rather than exclude the E175's type (aka the Compass divestiture).

I like the jet, but it is built for more cycles than a washing machine at a house with 8 kids.

Call your reps and tell them you want them to take advantage of any opportunities to recapture that flying afforded by the pilot shortage. Yeah, they're smaller and lower paying than our present narrow bodies, but come with a really nice mix of flying with cool layovers, a really nice plane, and likely accelerated seniority (USAir has 2 yr CAs flying them!). We used to do that flying, lost it in BK, and have a rare shot at recapturing it in the next few years. Let's make sure we're ready to take advantage!

Hate to say this (I really do) but it makes sense. You've got a new jet with a new wing and cycle limited fuselage flying against a design from the 1950's with a fuselage that don't care about cycles (100,000+)

We should really try to buy a life limited low cycle jet and put it at mainline.

What do you think of the JAN layover?

Don't know. Wouldn't doubt it.
The one thing about UsAir and I hear this from RJ guys, that's the place to go. You'll be in the merger and everyone above them on that list is super old and your progression will be accelerated.
It's something that I think DAL will need to compete against. Come to DAL or go to USAir and be a DFW American Airlines Captain on the 757 long before you can hold a Captain spot at DAL.
Just repeating what I read and hear. ymmv, accuracy may very too.
A friend is taking a class at US Air this month and leaving behind his Compass flow to Delta. Flow would be in about 9 months.

Delta TechOps expands maintenance providership with Hawaiian Airlines
Delta TechOps, Delta Air Lines’ maintenance division and Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) provider business, is deepening its long-standing relationship with Hawaiian Airlines to provide an integrated component exchange and repair program for Hawaiian’s fleet of 12 Boeing 767 aircraft. Delta TechOps has provided its Complete Fleet services for Hawaiian since 2009 across its Airbus A330 fleet. This latest announcement furthers that relationship to include component maintenance such as avionics and cabin maintenance for Hawaiian’s Boeing 767 fleet.
