I've had trouble doing it on flights that are full or oversold but that usually been with last minute DH

Yes!! Two deadheads this weekend and both days I had trouble. First day I got stuck between mom and crying lap child and the other side was a stinky smoker. Ugh... Second flight I watched non revs from regional airlines get economy comfort while the big cheese and I got coach.

First to review the DD rules, you can use TravelNet to request a DD to start the trip 14 days prior, the DD at the end of the trip once once you sign in.

Second, copy your locator number from TravelNet then go to

https://www.delta.com/PCCOciWeb/findBy.action

and see if you can pick a seat. Come back 23:59 prior to departure, check-in (send the ticket to your smart phone), put in your upgrade request for first class(LOL) and see if you can upgrade your seat to EC.

Thanks, I'll try again now, since my trip leaves in 6 days. They must have changed something though, because for the past 4 years, I've been able to book a good seat, both ways, 30 days (or more) out. So it's down to 14 days at the front, and after sign in for the back end now?

But when the 717 are all here, then we are right back in this mess, baring an order now for more similarly sized jets.

Actually it's been that way forever ... You just haven't gotten caught. Remind me, are you senior to me?

Hmmm...

Another gap Delta would like to fill is a good 115-120-seat aircraft, slightly larger than the Boeing 717s that is currently taking over from AirTran. “The 737-700 is not economical and the -800 is too large,” Anderson says. One option could be the Bombardier C-Series and Delta has looked at the geared turbofan (GTF) engine in particular.

Timbo, tons of info have been put out on this. The company essentially had us on the honor system to follow the rules. They felt we were big boys and made it easy unlike for the flight attendants. There have been no changes. I would do some reading.
