I did a high speed abort a couple of years ago. Beautiful day. Long runway. >120 kts, brakes >700 degrees. Did a complete abort brief since it was the first leg and amazingly we aborted just exactly as briefed. The NTSB took over the investigation because tower had crossed an aircraft in front of us. We hit all the required briefing gates and survived the rectal exam without bruising. I was glad I briefed.

It takes a lot of licking of those suction cups to get the efb holder to stay on. There has to be a better way.

Try sneezing into them, that might work.
Make sure to include that in your brief. |

I just stick my index finger up my butt and then rub the cups with the juice... Works great, lasts a long time. ;) "Mmmm...Nutty Flavor!" |

Brief the abort in detail on the first leg with a new FO and then on subsequent briefs it's just "Aborts, previously briefed with no additions". (Unless there is an additional threat.) Aren't we all doing that?

As a new FO, I appreciate a detailed abnormals/abort brief on the first leg of a trip. I also think it's worthwhile to re-visit the abnormals on subsequent legs. It takes very little time and sets a professional tone.
'Approaching Inbound Course' and 'Approaching Vertical Path' are also fine callouts IMHO. What I really wish I could do as the pilot flying is configure the gear and flaps myself. It seems like everytime I want to want to configure, the Captain is talking to ATC, which causes unnecessary delays in configuring. But then again, it's probably just me... MCFlyer You should mention it to him after his 'first leg' brief, see if he's ok with it, but unless he's a moron, he will be ok with it. When I'm flying as Capt. if the F/O's busy responding to ATC, I'll just point at what I want or get it myself. Nobody is too hung up on that as long as you get a nod from the other guy. Why make it harder than it has to be? |

Yes. The question is: Why? Do we brief what we go-around for on every trip?
I brief the entire go around, all buttons to be pushed, power settings, flap settings, gear up point, etc. It only takes about 5 minutes while being vectored to a different runway...then I call for the "Runway Change Checklist" ask for a hold, while I load it and brief it all over again! I just love hearing myself talk! Remember, we get paid by the minute, time is money, a runway change will require a new briefing, for both the approach and the go around, and you can never be too safe. So just go hold somewhere and make some money. Let SW set all the records for shortest approach, fastest landing/taxi back. |
