What is the last great RJ rollout?

CAL management just proposed DAL Contract + $1 to us (CAL).

"Continental Proposes Delta Contract for CAL Pilots
Last December ALPA and Continental discussed the somewhat unusual step of releasing the details of each sides’ initial economic proposals. We agreed that ALPA’s opening economic proposal was so comprehensive and so extensive, that it made sense to publically release each party’s initial economic proposals.

Today Continental proposed to ALPA that our current collective bargaining agreement be replaced in its entirety with the terms of the current Delta Pilot Working Agreement (PWA), except that we would add $1 to each of the hourly pay rates, and an ALPA representative would not be appointed to Continental’s Board of Directors.

We recognize that since Delta is the largest airline in the world, it sets the standard for labor, not only for Continental but also for other legacy airlines. As the fourth largest airline, we aren’t in a position to have materially higher labor costs than Delta. This proposal eliminates that concern, and just as importantly eliminates pilot labor as a pawn in the increasingly vigorous competition between Continental and Delta. Instead we will compete on the basis of our superior product, service and pricing."

I hope you CAL guys laugh and say no thanks. Your initial proposal was much more than we have right now so our contract + 1 isnt even close to what the initial proposal was. I hope yall get MUCH more.

They are trying to see how many more little 2 and 3 day trips they can cram into a month on the DC9 up in DTW. So far I am only at 10 commutes for the month, thankfully a few are commutable on one end...

I thought ALPA promised to get the five day back on the schedule? How did I go from 3 4-day trips a month, commutable on the back ends to 5 trips a month, worth 10 less hours and hardly any of it is commutable? It looks like the guys well above me didn't fare that well either. Maybe they think all the 9 pilots live in Traylor.

Gotta hand it to them. What a brilliant move by management. They just cut CALPA off at the knees in any arbitration. We have essentially set the market and CAL has just paid higher (by $1) than market rates. I think the work rules also are a huge change. (Speaking with only anecdotal knowledge on the previous point. I would be happy to eat my words if I'm not right!) Gonna be interesting how this turns out.

Complain about what? That your costs are going down (significantly) in the core plan? That the plan is more compliant with the law? That it's modeled after and an enhanced version of the top rated 401K (NWA RSP)by an independent rating agency?

Or that your personal pet fund is no longer subsidized by other pilots...:p

Seriously, though, the NWA and Delta plans had to merge. Delta management has the right under the contract to pick the Trustee, funds, etc. for the plan. They used outside consultants to help with the design. You'll still have access to almost all the funds you like via BrokerageLink, and the core funds in the plan should be lower cost and better performing for the average pilot investor.

Delta work rules would be a huge change for CAL. They're a very expensive improvement to their book. Pay, not so much...

Delta did its PWA/JCBA in the face of the worst airline recession ever. It resulted in pilots owning 5.6% of the company, plus substantial progress on restoring bankruptcy cuts. CAL's contract is looking into the face of an uncertain but developing economic recovery. They should blow by our contract on the economics. Pattern bargaining worked going up (and down). It's on the upside now.
