My good smart buddy pointed something out that's awesome for you iPhone users... or totally tubular for you lax crews. In case this has not been mentioned before, if you want to see the airport standby list it's not possible on travelnet flight listings but you can actually check it under Tools on travelnet. Works great.

Since I am a fNWA and not familiar with Scrappy, is that a bad or good thing?[/] Based on some things I've heard about and seen of his scheduling committee work, I think we'll have to watch him closely. He may tend toward rolling over for management. If anyone out there has the opposite impression, I'd like to hear about it. |
A little off topic here but, by now, we all know that our 401k plan is changing in a couple of months and we will have to choose new funds. Here's the question, if you still have the stock from the merger in your account, can you keep it or will do you need to sell it in order for it to be put in one of the "new" funds or, if you want to keep it, will you need to sell it and re-purchase via the brokerage link?

You can also see the NONREVENUE STANDBY LIST from that menu as well. Interestingly - if you have a flight with a one digit number (7, 4, etc) it won't show the list. You have to enter 07 for it to show either list. |

Remember the conversation on the modified MD-80 engines? http://www.dugankinetics.com/public/...age_Slider.jpg Click on the image above to see their site. Well they did their testing and the results are a 20% reduction in fuel burn during climb, a 0.5%-7.8% reduction during cruise, 1% savings during descent, stage 4 now over stage 3 and this: http://dugankinetics.mirahost.com/pu...sons_Chart.jpg You basically order a new thrust reverser with that modification. Their website says that they have "initiated negotiations with select MD-80 operators and expects to finalize the lead customer by late spring 2010." Deliveries starting by spring/summer. Hope we're one of them. Any fuel savings would be great. So the MD88, according to Delta, "the life of the fuselage is expected to be 110,000 flight cycles and 150,000 flight hours... that means that most MD-80s have 20-30 years of service remaining." And if this testing is true then you might just make a 142/150 seater have near the fuel burn of the MD90 and be within 2.5% of the 738. Interesting. Hope it happens. Sure Boeing and Airbus are excited if Delta can get a way with ordering more fuel efficient airplanes by simply ordering new and improved buckets for their fleet thats only about 19 years old. Now slap these on the 9s and there is our 100 seaters! I flew a meteorology plane for flight test programs in the mid 90's. We had the md-95 (aka 717), G-2, DC-8's ect. All came because our hangars were huge and our airport was usually a ghost town. There were two main company's trying to come up with a good noise reduction and fuel savings mod. Of all the airports in the world, both company's showed up at our airport within a couple days of each other. We were duct taping new N numbers on to try an remain stealthy but by the end of the week all the engineers were sharing their work over cold beers. That MD-80 thrust reverser looks A LOT like the one I saw. |

Regarding re-engineering the DC-9s: It is entirely doable. In the 90's, NWA was searching for a DC-9 replacement. What they found was that with all the in-house technical knowledge, they could essentially re-manufacture the aircraft....strip it down to the frame and put it back together with some improvements and a new interior for between 1 and 1.5 million dollars. Gas was cheap, so there wasn't any point in re-engineing, and JT8s were cheap and plentiful. 20 years later, the DC-9 is STILL a great aircraft. Sturdy, simple, capable. But to re-engine it, you would need to address the aft-bulkhead mod. In the past, it was cost prohibitive to make this mod. But given the cost of a replacement, not to mention all the stuff that goes with it: Spooling up a new program, sims, training, parts, etc...putting the DC-9 into service for another 20 years starts to make financial sense.
