But I'm reading here from you international types that we are leaving freight behind:confused:.

OTOH, Delta just trumpeted its new $10 miliion mail contract. Fed Ex's mail contract is $1 BILLION, according to my Fed Ex buddies. Still sounds like there's money to be made out there.

If memory serves, during the SLI talks, they said that the 747-200's couldn't efficiently compete with the newer aircraft and would be quickly removed from the fleet. That is precisely what happened. Maybe we should purchase some new A380's. I'm tired of grumpy pax anyway. Ha :p

Let me fix that for you.

NWA just didn't want to invest in the freighters. Their competitors all bought B747-400 freighters and have lower costs. Atlas, Kalitta Air and Evergreen all make money these days and are US based and run.

That closes the loop on my original post a few pages back. Passenger carriers have never been able to figure out the freight business. I'm really not sure why. FWIW, Atlas would have still made a substantial profit paying market wages back then.

BTW, I loved flying freight. It was the pay, benefits, schedules, contract (actually, a lack of all of the above) which caused me to seek fame and fortune elsewhere. I've given up on the fame (though I'm still checking out rivers to land in:p), and the fortune part isn't looking so hot, either :D.

That's a good point - when the LAX and CVG 767 bases were converted to ER they were opened for bid just like a new category (which is what they were). Is there some sort of side agreement with ALPA concerning the 755 transition that would keep this from happening?

It was agreed in the transition agreement that both the MSP and DTW 757 bases would become 7ER bases without a rebid. They have only applied the 755 designation to insure the computer system keeps them off any 767 equipment until they are qualed. I believe 1 May both MSP and DTW become 7ER bases and will be fully qualified.

I could go on forever on why US pax carriers can't make money in freight. Summary: too many other costs added onto the freight operation.

I flew freight for 9 years prior to Delta - last job was flying the 747 for Kalitta Air. I completely agree on the reasons to move on from freight!

So what you are saying is that our previous management was actually correct about something? Difficult to believe. LOL

Oh yeah???...Well, if she's so smart AND a pilot, why didn't she stay for the extra week of training and be a pilot instead of a FA?:p (totally tongue in cheek ;))

Heh. Nice to be a member of the world's only "Air Line", eh?

Uh....CVG and SLC (for a little while longer) are 90 qualed presently.

*and NYC is to be 90 qualed by the end of 2010(per LGA CPO).

Wasn't aware of MSP DC9 closing, but it makes sense that with only 34 airframes you don't need three different pilot domiciles.

Maybe Dr. Evil is negotiating our mail contracts and hasn't quite grasped the difference between a "million" and a "billion". <evil laugh>

Well - they were correct that THEY couldn't make money in freight.

Many other passenger airlines make money - and pay their pilots top dollar doing so. Cathay, Air France, Lufthansa come to mind. Singapore has a cargo division, but I'm not familiar with the pay scale. Oh - and all those airlines are flying B747-400s or similar equipment.
