Any "Latest & Greatest" about Delta?
I've got to agree. I've never flown SOPA/SMAC so I can't comment on it. I'm sure if there was a "slam dunk" answer on which procedure was better there would be data galore to support that conclusion from both pre-merger airlines operating history (operational errors, deviations, ASAP, FOQA, etc.) I am still optimistic that over the next couple of years our procedures will continue to evolve to "best practice."
I do find it interesting that one of the main protagonists in this discussion talking about Delta standardization is on one of the two aircraft fleets with zero cross pollination. All the training and check airmen he is exposed to are the same as they've always been, just the book they're operating under is different. On another forum I see plenty of compliments for both pre-merger operations from those that have been cross-pollinated. Maybe after the fences come down Carl can find some value...

Carl- it works great both ways. Sorry.
There is more than one way than one to skin a cat... or fly a airplane (safely, professionally, and standard).
Goes both ways... just because you've done it that way for years doesn't make it the right way either. Like I've said time and again, we're going to see (and are seeing) a more joint combination of procedures.

Yawn. Anybody hear the latest and greatest about Delta? Please tell me this isn't it.
Here's the problem: Since there's no command, what happens if the captain doesn't notice that you didn't move the flaps uncommanded? This double distraction scenario is exactly why the industry has moved towards commands and responses. With our operation, this important system activation is entirely silent.
Recent events should give you and all of us pause about the wisdom of this current policy. I know you know which ones I'm talking about.

Its on the checklist (twice I think) if they aren't moved. But I dont disagree with you Carl, I would have especially found a SOP - type document very useful after coming to DAL from the military.

Yep, Waive off the ground crew. Look to the flap handle. FO moves the flaps to takeoff position. Clear of the ramp area flight control check double checking flap position. Taxi Check list. Triple check flaps in TO position, Takeoff checklist one last check flaps are in TO position.
The trigger at Delta to lower the flaps is the waive off. Both systems have a trigger its just different.
Delta also had different procedures then NW in other situations regarding flaps. As a example Delta taxied and deiced flaps up. NW did it flaps down in snow and ice conditions. Most airlines deice flaps up. In Moscow they will not even deice a aircraft with the flaps down. We adopted the NW method however I was still able to leave Moscow because I knew as a Captain at Delta I had the authority to put the flaps to up to deice. The choice was that or stay until spring. I prefer to have some authority and choice.
Given the recent mandatory memo, I'm surprised that anyone is still defending the current system. I'll bet the regulators won't defend it. We'll see.

Guys,
If you get tired of fighting the 2008 version of North vs. South, I recommend the 1863 version. The technology and processes were so superior on the North side that the South didn't have a chance.
The Southern boys have been sharpshooters but they sure weren't standardized. And the North, they may have had technological superiority, but they couldn't adopt very quickly to a changing environment.
Oh wait, why are we even still arguing about history? I agree you must know your history to avoid repeating mistakes, but why keep arguing about it?

Just think, if the people on here were to spend as much time and energy trying to improve Delta by coming up with solutions than having a p1ssing contest how much better would work be? Its up to us to find out.
This thread would improve if people like you would stop referring to substantive discussions as "p1ssing contests." Wise up.

I think this has been a good discussion on both sides. Solutions are being offered...you're just not listening. Time and energy is what is required to make change.

Are the solutions being offered here, or are you personally going forward with ideas and solutions to the people who can get things changed? Seems to me there is a lot of the first and not much of the latter around these parts.
