Aircell, the provider of Gogo In-Flight Internet service on Delta aircraft, announced Wednesday that it is unveiling an expanded technology roadmap for the delivery of its Gogo service, including the eventual addition of satellite technology.
“Our customers already enjoy access to 555 Wi-Fi equipped aircraft on our domestic mainline fleet and will soon enjoy access to an additional 223 Wi-Fi equipped Delta Connection jets by the end of 2011,” Delta said in a statement. “With more than 2,200 flights daily, Delta operates the largest fleet of Wi-Fi enabled aircraft in the world. We are pleased that the in-flight Wi-Fi industry is moving in a direction that takes the needs of global airlines into consideration. We look forward to reviewing new connectivity options for our customers.” In addition to Aircell’s existing Air-to-Ground (ATG) technology, the company announced it will enable connectivity via a next generation version of ATG called “ATG-4.” ATG-4 will enhance the existing ATG network and improve per aircraft capacity by approximately four times its current performance, and is scheduled for commercial delivery beginning in the first half of next year. Aircell also announced it will offer “Ka-band” satellite technology, which will provide additional capacity to supplement what is available through ATG, ATG-4 and current generation satellite technology. The new technology will enable Gogo service beyond the continental U.S. by 2015, and will be available in the continental U.S. in 2013. “Aircraft with missions beyond [the continental United States] will benefit from the geographic flexibility a satellite solution provides,” Aircell said in a release. |

Good news IMO. SWA was using their satellite based in flight wireless as a selling point to take SWA over those 'other' airlines using ground based in flight wireless. This will be a nice product for our customers.

As of 1 Nov 2010 SW only had 32 aircraft in their fleet equipped with any wifi. Not sure why the customer would care if its land or sat based since it the case of SW they only fly domestic. It will be a improvement for Delta since we fly world wide.

The other crazy historical stuff of the time was that tornado that hit DC in the middle of it being burned by the British in the war of 1812. Or 1814. And they abandoned the place after the storm. That's nearly biblical. Speaking of that time period, the main road from my parents neighborhood is Surrender Road in Yorktown. They actually made it so you can't drive straight on their road onto Surrender but it was the same road. Neat place to visit at least once but really not overly exciting. Although the Redoubts and their historical markers can be very interesting to see the names of the people involved, the number of Germans and French involved and the famous names. Actually, Germans made up a third of the participants in the battle and to make things confusing, there were Germans fighting with the British, Americans and French. There is one redoubt (9 or 10) that was captured by Hamilton and once that happened the British started pulling back and Washington just bombarded the town and the battle of Yorktown was won. You can see the redoubts, not sure of their accuracy but it's probably better than Ford's Theatre in D.C. If you go to ORF, hang a right outside the hotel and pass the free McArthur memorial/museum and go a block or so you'll find an old church with a cannon ball stuck in the wall. There is a plaque saying it was put there in 1776. I think they cemented it back in place. The walls are original but the church was burned during the siege. The HBO John Adams movie was a mini-series, so it will take some time to get through. It's well worth it though. They do a great scene at the end that incorporates the letters he and Jefferson passed between each other. They were both great writers/communicators. It's seems as though I have run into another history geek. I'll have to check those places out. I can't wait to get a good, long layover in CHS, so I can visit some Civil War history. |
