Any advice on Pros and Cons with leaving ATL would be much appreciated. I would consider northern Ohio or Ann Arbor if DTW and have no clue about MSP. DTW isn't so bad. Good real estate market for buyers right now. Michigan is actually a very nice state, and there are some high quality places outside of DTW to live if you don't mind a short commute (LAN, AZO, GRR, etc). MSP...errr, I dunno. Unless you or your wife has relatives in MN, you might find MSP a bit hard to take. The actual place itself is somewhat tolerable, but the locals can be tough. I know guys who have lived there 10 years, and their neighbors still treat them like outsiders. A very cliquish, uptight vibe, and they get all wrapped up about where you went to high school. The town itself is fairly spendy. Definitely on the upper end of cost of living, and the taxes will drive you up the wall. If the local news was your guide, you'd think that absolutely everything in the entire known universe revolves around Minnesota. Someone mentioned that CVG was very much the same way. Most people not absolutely tied to MSP rarely last more than 4-5 years there. That turned out to be my level of endurance. Unlike DTW, there is absolutely NOTHING outside of MSP for 100's of miles in any direction with the exception of FSD. FSD is a VERY nice town, and it's a complete 180 from the way MSP is. SD is extremely affordable, and has no income tax. The people there welcome everyone, and are unfailing friendly. But FSD is the high prairie and there ain't nuttin westbound until you get to Portland, Oregon. I'm not sayin' don't move there, but do your due diligence with your spouse before leaping. Nu |

Nu I can vouch for most of Nu's comments, I have been in MSP for 13 years, and yes the locals are always busy going to their uncles (insert other relatives) cabin. They aren't really looking to expand their circle of friends, unlike alot of other spots in this great country. They are usually very nice to you, but it really never goes beyond being "Minnesota Nice". The best way in is to marry a local, which is what I did...:eek: YMMV, Gripen |

I think the Twin Cities is the 2nd best place to live in the US after PDX. I do have to admit, though, that my Great-Grandmother built the family cabin up North on a lake in 1919. I spent all my summers as a kid up there. VERY Nice! cliff NBO |
If you are senior to me, MSP and MN is the absolute worst and most miserable place to live and do not even think of raising children there. All they will learn is that you should want to pay taxes, a LOT of taxes to support the arts and needy.
However, if you are junior to me, it is great if you can enjoy the outdoors in the winter. |

DTW is a dump. Murder Captol of the US. Economy bad and getting much worse with auto industry ills. My sister got a bullet hole in her car driving down the freeway. I rarely go out unarmed. The Lions are the pits. Children are frequently abducted and they eat dogs in Dearborn. You don't see sunshine from November until the end of March. I know a lot of DTW commuters can't wait to bid into ATL.
If you stay west of 275 or in Oakland county then its not bad. Bought a house last year for 80 K less than my neighbor in Canton and the wife loves it. Very quiete and almost no crime with a very good school district. |
