FTB... dude... chill. It's a process. At least there's not NO order and a reduction of the 757s. I'm not thrilled about this either, but we are a long way away from actually pulling the plastic off of any seats.

It will. It's called an MD-83. It has an aux tank. The MD-87 has two aux tanks. The 900ER has two according to Boeing.

I have to agree, there's been unannounced retirement of the 757's and it's yearsvaway from happening. Also the orders have just begun, time will tell how it plays out. the shrinking likely is coming at the regionals expense just as it is now. The shift looks to be back to mainline planes, we'll see

The -900 will probably be a good money maker for us and will serve well on the shorter high density segments. I'm still curious as to what the long term solution is for the 757 replacement. DL has in the past been the launch customer for the DC-8, DC-9, and 767. Perhaps there are ongoing discussions with Boeing about future developments.

I wonder what a GTF would do for a 757?

When the 757s run out of passenger life, they still have a whole other lifespan flying cargo. There is a ready made market for them when we finally have to sell them off...fedex/ups. What a good looking, great performing jet!

Er?

Does anyone know exactly what makes the 737-900ER an ER? Is it the same story as our 757-200ER's and 767-300ER's, where they have the redundancy to do extended overwater ops?

I don't know any of the mileages, but could 3200NM get you from JFK to some of the smaller western Europe cities like the 757's are doing now? How about PIT-CDG?

Or does the ER just signify a few AUX tanks that allow it to do on 5 tanks what the -700/800 can do on 3?

This is why size-based pay isn't working very well anymore. Sure, back when airlines were advancing from DC-3 to DC-4 to DC-6 etc pay increased rapidly.. but now, airlines are replacing larger with smaller. (B757 -> B737, B747-400 -> B777, etc)

Cal had plans to fly it to Europe but never did it for one reason or another. I sure wouldn't want to ride a 737 on routes like that as a passenger.

Youre right, I'm just venting. I want us to provide a good product, don't see the 739 as worthy of $8B or even $4B of debt in that pursuit.

That one article did state we can complete this order by 2018, which means we'll either have 100ish extra NBs by then or we can start sending the 757s off while they still have a decent resale value.
