I could say that about a lot of other things on this thread, but I don't. I feel folks should feel free to discuss whatever they desire, no matter how trivial it is. And yes, a lot is trivial, but it's a web forum, so what's the big deal. Just because some like to chime in with their 2 cents doesn't necessarily mean the issue is of that much importance to them. So like I said, I hold off and scroll past the stuff I find boring and not worth reading. The thought being, who am I to decide what's worth discussing on a web forum?

You're correct: this isn't an important issue. It's only an interesting conversational piece, and this is just a big conversation.

The only thing you wrote that I wouldn't say is "right on" is the RHIP concept. In my mind, rank implies leadership and example, not only privilege. I think this discussion was correctly re-framed, first by BrakeChatter, as a question of personal attitude. If RHIP was the governing concept here, then what about F/O's that don't try to earn the Best Supporting Actor Oscar? What's their excuse for being lazy? And if RHIP was the only relevant principle in a professional relationship, then infantry commanders would feel free to eat before the troops, and would lead from the back.

Some do, of course, which best makes the point: this is about personal ethics and behavior.

What you are referring to is known in nuclear physics and certain Irish watering holes as the "Pre-flight Paradox." It is predominantly a forum based (and consequently internet driven) anomaly wherein a sole poster puts out something controversial which is then beaten back by the aroused multitudes. The sheer volume of refutiations ends up giving the original, and often solitary post and or opinion, far greater veracity then it would otherwise have.

In other words - Its not a big deal! Co-Pilots should expect to do all the walk-arounds. If a Captain wants to do one great - but don't expect it!

And furthermore I would like to point out that the majority of FO posters here not only agree with this but have spoken out in praise of the Captains and I agree. Both Delta and Northwest have a done a pretty good job of hiring the right individuals. With 12,000 Pilots we will always have a few "oddballs," hell even NASA can't screen to 100% - remember the astronaut that drove 800 miles wearing a diaper to confront her romantic rival?

So lets all take a deep breath and return to some juicy rumors of growth and world domination!

Finally, to all the Captains that think the FOs are whiny - remember the internet, and forums in particular, provides a very loud megaphone for even the most obscure and off base opinion. Hopefully the level of FO whininess is not much different than it has always been. Although there may be some societal trends that point to the "Me" generation hopefully it is minimal among airline crews.

I, am also at a loss to understand why the walk around is such a big deal. I actually enjoy them. Unless it is pouring buckets outside, then the A isn't likely to do them anyways. To be perfectly honest, the only guy I had flown with that wanted to do half, actually was kind of annoying!

About the only parts of getting of the ground that bugs me, is when the Capt, arrives at the plane 20 minutes to push and chastises me for doing both preflights, and the other one is, when they get to the FD 10 minutes prior to push and start reading notams! I am sure there are times when it is unavoidable, but being late out of the gate, every push gets old, quick.

Better to end it that way than to start it that way. Wish me luck I am debating going cheap and laying 25 pallets of sod on my own, after I lay 25 yards to top soil and grade the yard. Yep, I am a pilot and I am cheap. :D
