Are you looking solely within NYC city limits? Manhattan is gonna run you 2000-3000/mo for a one bedroom apt. 3500-6000/mo for a two bedroom.
Queens is more convenient to JFK and LGA. Bayside is a decent area with lots of rentals.
If you are willing to cross bridges($$$, traffic) you may do well in NJ or White Plains. If you aren't checkout Port Jefferson or Huntington Station on LI for house rentals.
Good luck.

Thx, Marcal. If we are going to be there for a short perjod, we'd prefer to be in the city, but not necessarily Manhattan. First year pay won't be enough there. My wife is Korean and being close to a Korean grocery would be good. Heard Flushing is the K town of NYC, but know nothing of the area.

Flushing is like Little Asia. I flew in the Far East for 7 years and if you dropped me in Flushing and said I was in HKG, I'd believe you. Don't' know about rental prices though. That said, checkout Astoria for close proximity to Manhattan w/o Manhattan prices. Its next to LGA and has a young, cool vibe with lots of diversity and restaurants, etc. Bayside is a little more "neighborhood-like", but tons of rentals.
All are convenient to JFK/LGA.
If you use a broker to find a place, they may try to charge you a broker fee of up to 15% of the whole years rent! Tell them you'll only pay one month at the most and if they tell you no, find another broker. There are thousands. I know b/c I was one. Fee's for brokers are negotiable 10000% despite what they tell you.

I'm at 12k and as of now there are about 70 in front of me with 41 as their 1st pick. If 15 happen to be from CVG/SLC then I might actually have a chance. Due to kids in HS this is my moonshot, if I get it on this AE awesome, if not then I'm going to live in ATL for at least the next 6 - 10 years (depending on how much we like it and if the kids are getting in-state tuition).

It's Georgia Hope. Very similar to Florida Bright Futures program.
Usually pays only a portion of tuition. It is pegged to an in state average tuition as of 3-4 years ago. Tuition and fees and such have far outpaced the Hope schedule, but that's a different forum. The cost of college is out of control, mainly because normal market forces are not in play there. Politicly the future of the Hope scholarship program is uncertain. Therefore, I would not plan on it being around in 5-6 years, and be pleasantly surprised if it is.
Hope also requires the student to keep a 3.0, so, if your kid's cumulative GPA drops to 2.999, you are "hopeless". I am just finishing putting my second (youngest) through his EE degree in GA. Between my two kids, for 7 years it was/is like buying a new car each year, that I don't get to drive and my kids kept the scholarship every semester. Hope covered about $3500-4500/year of the cost depending on the semester hour load.

July 07 hire and right before the bid closed there were 16 senior to me bidding SEA 73N. I figured it would trend a little more senior than that. Be interesting to see how junior it goes.
