When the delta employee opens the email, it gives him/her a format in which to write. Once the employee is done, they submit the recommendation and it is done. It is instantly updated on airlineapps and the applicant can see that it is done.
It is very streamlined and user friendly.

The airlineapps request for recommendation sends an autogenerated email to the delta email address.

Ok great, thanks. Just had one of my recommendations open it up, looks like they, the person doing the recommending, have to enter their email on the request form and since none of them actively use their DL accounts they put in their personal acct so they could be reached. If this helps anyone--even though I the DL hopeful, sent their request to the Delta employee's email though airlineapps, maybe ask your recommender to kindly key in their Delta email in the body of the form to enhance visibility to Delta as mentioned.
Many thanks all

He said the reason for that was, that is the only way the hiring board can verify you (the letter writer) are actually a Delta Employee.
I had never before in my life used my Delta email, so I had to activate it and low and behold, there were already about 1000+ emails in my in box, from Corporate Communications, about every bright idea and fragrant fart Richard ever had.
Why do we pay these guys for that??? After I spent an hour deleting those, I had to call my budd, give him my "Delta Email" address so he could use it on his Airline Apps. com, then an email rec. request from Airline Apps showed up in my Delta inbox and I was finally able to write a letter of rec. for my buddy, and yes, it has to come/go through Airline Apps. to your Delta inbox before you can write it.
Oh...the rest of the story?
My budd got hired at US Air 6 months ago and is flying A320 F/O there today. He's young and at the front of the wave, so if they ever get merged with AA, I think he'll be fine.
