If I do bid first Capt position available and commute I will be a captain for about 11 years. Not the career I envisioned.
Remember we're adding more mainline airplanes, so it will trend more junior as the list grows. At the SLI, the most junior captain was around 10,500. Parked a bunch of 9s and widebodies... and now we're rebuilding.

The 00-01 hires win the award for the biggest **** sandwich ever in regards to career progression. I feel for ya.

A 30 year old hired this year will be an MD-88 captain by age 38. That should make all the newbies feel good.......those guys in 00-01 thought the same thing the day they got hired though.

Sure we can. DL pilots played a significant role in both rejecting what would have been a disasterous USAir merger as well as greasing the skids for the incredibly successful by any historical standard NW merger. Some mergers are way more high threat than others and we need to treat them as such not just from day one but long before. There are ways to mitigate high threat relative windfall SLI's from low longevity airlines. AS actually wouldn't be too bad, and could be workable with just a fence, while other scenarios may need a Guadalupe Holdings style approach to protect our careers.

There is a lot we can do about it.

You can predict the next 8 years without any terrorist attacks on US soil, economic recession, oil spike, WWIII, or a billion other things that have historically set pilot careers back?

Got hired in 00, at that time people were making Capt on the -200 in MCO in about 24 months. Then 9-11, furlough and BK. So start building back and could hold any widebody FO position (yes even 777), and missed Capt MD88 by 1 month of seniority in 08, then the merger synergi's hit and haven't come close.

That being said, if what the head shed is saying is true, we are going to have a hiring spree like 96-01 so if you are hired at the beginning to middle then you will have a pretty good career and fairly quick upgrades.

If that's true, I'm looking at a 14 year upgrade. I will not commute to New York though so I stand by my 16 year upgrade statement. I still think I have 10 years to go.

What 30 year old is getting hired at DAL this year? With folks not even getting interviews that have 7-10k worth of hours, 121 experience, and lots of PIC, a 30 year old new hire right now is the outlier. Far from the norm and certainly not where a career progression argument should be focused.

I would love to hear about 30 year olds getting hired in droves - that would mean we'd all have a shot!

Got hired in October. 30yrs old. Most guys hired on my day were early to mid 30's. A couple retiring mil guys were obviously a bit older.

And I should say I know another guy hired in October that is 29. But I see your point, most guys are not hired south of 33-34.
