Two military buds of mine have applied to Delta and other airlines. One went to SWA (no Delta interview offer yet, and even if given one probably won't change at this point). The other has had an interview with United, one scheduled for FedEx and another with SWA. He's gotten the offer from United so far. My point being, what's with Delta? They must not be needing military guys (age 38-42) who have great resumés.

They are swamped with apps like that. They will get called however it might be a long wait.

That's my point: These guys aren't waiting--they're going elsewhere. The pay and WB opportunity at United is one of the reasons I've been given. The other is FedEx's pay, retirement and other pluses (e.g. Vacation).

Good for them. Delta can't hire every pilot with qualifications like that. We have a limited need and capacity. Plenty more for years into the future where they are coming from. I have written letters for 6 guys who have great quals. Not one called yet. Maybe I am the kiss of death. The new hires I have flown with have with only one exception been outstanding.

When you say "military" are you including the Air Force?

What's with Delta is they are hiring lots of highly qualified applicants, they have tons of them. They can't hire every single "highly qualified" applicant out there. I was impressed with all of my fellow new hires both military and civilian...even my fellow, lowly 28-32 year old hires.

They should go to wherever they get the first class date. Then, if they get offers elsewhere, they have a decision to make. You can leave one major to go to another, don't fall into the sunk cost fallacy that you can't leave once you've picked a job. Two of AAL classmates left after 1-1.5 years to go to FedEx, one of my classmates had left UAL after 9 months to come to AAL. There are people leaving every airline to go to another right now. If they really want Delta, then they'll leave when offered a class date.

I brought it up because a friend of mine was flying with a LCA recently and he was made privy to an email that said the company was having trouble getting enough pilots of the caliber they wanted to come on board. The concern was that the candidates were choosing other airlines. I can understand to an extent why, especially when we had CJOs waiting 200+ days to get on property and our competitors have better pay and work rules. And apparently Delta is trying to get them as quickly as possible because they've drained the pool and want CJOs to get in class around two weeks after the interview. Which makes me wonder if AirlineApps needs to tweak their software, cuz the fact that FedEx, SWA, and United are getting an invite out to these guys within two weeks of their app being submitted while Delta dithers doesn't add up. To each their own I guess. For one of these guys Delta is an afterthought so it's not a big deal to him, and in fact he's not even concerned about it. I'm just wondering why D hasn't shown interest while these other competitors are chomping at the bit to get him on board. No big deal.

Straight from SD at the roadshow. Not second or third hand. The company had expected to start hiring from the tier 2 pool this summer. Instead the Tier one pool has been replenishing itself with new applicants as fast as the hire them out. He called it a pleasant surprise.
