Warthawg, welcome. DFW not only has lots of FAs, but pilots, too. I'd not count on the company opening a satellite base. Rumors happen all the time around here, but not many come to fruition. Also, you can reserve the jumpseat and it's yours, regardless of seniority. Try your best to avoid having to use the positive space option, especially while on probation. Enjoy the gig; Delta is a good place to be!

Also heard the company may make DFW a satellite base for FAs only. That would ease the commute some. Anyone able to shed any light.
Guys will have their watches set to the exact second in order to get the jumpseat. The FA base has been rumored for a long time. It is not a commute that I would want to do on probation. Give yourself plenty of time to get to work so you do not need to use the commute policy. You should be able to get Atlanta on a bid if you do not receive it in class. Personally, I would consider making the move closer to your base if possible or somewhere that does not have so many commuters.

I'm a DFW commuter. I have heard that rumor but I would not count on it. You will hear ton on DFW rumors b/c we have so many commuters to make them up. From around April-Mid Aug it's a hard commute. Then easy up until Holidays and special events. We do have a ton of flights with DL and AA. SW will go direct starting in Oct. If you have 20 or more years with Delta I would move. On the commute policy, I remember when it came out management was saying they only wanted you do use this 1-2 times a year. Now I have had some guys tell me you can use it as much as you need. I have never had to use it. It would be a great question when your in Indoc to ask a chief pilot when they come to there free dinner.

One more topic. Do I need a laptop for training or once oe complete. Or can I get everything done with the iPad.

Back at...the iPad was good for everything but monthly bidding on nag tech pbs which the iPad was pretty much useless for.

Spirit is flying DFW ATL once or twice a day. Happy to help with your commute. You can reserve the Jumpseat 72 hours in advance.

No, it cannot be done with just an ipad.

This has been talked about on another thread somewhere. Delta is a Microsoft based system. If I was a new guy, I'd invest in a $350 (or possibly cheaper now) laptop that can run a cd (quarterly training) and has a usb port for the thumb drive for qualification training. Then you can have the option of doing the training where you want and not be tied to training center/hotel computers. I think junglebus talked about how to do it with a Mac system and partitioning somewhere....

Inflight posted on a recent question and answer session that DFW is no longer under any consideration as a satellite base.

I just flew with a DFW commuter, and he said the NYC commute isn't too bad... fwiw.

As a newhire you do not want to deal with DFW-ATL imho. I have heard NYC is easier, but pretty sure it's all rjs(no booking of the js, and no FA jumpseat). MSP and DTW became tough also with the merger making them mostly rj from all mainline. I think MSP and DTW might have 1 mainline per day. Hopefully as more 717s come on line, MSP and DTW will be upgauged.
