Mike, don't forget the jumpseat(s). Cabin can be full with 20 HKs unable to board, and you still may well still get on the plane. Delta's got an exceptionally commuter-friendly JS policy whereby you can reserve the JS. Add to that any open FA and/or offline jumpseats, and you have far better chances of getting on than a typical non-rev'er....

That situation should show up as 0 available when checking loads. HKs show up in the load check (a ticket has been sold without a seat assigned). I think where people get in trouble trying to understand this is when they look at the airport standby list (active list with people checking in etc.) and see the high number of seats at the top not assigned. These seats aren't empty most of the time but simply not assigned. Once the HK checks-in, he will show up on the active list awaiting a seat. HK is not a distressed pax, simply doesn't have a seat. The initial load page on travelnet is the best indicator of the actual loads and in this example would show 0 available. The active airport standby list is usually the best indicator within 30 minutes.
I have one child beginning 7th grade this year and another entering high school. The high schooler is also very dedicated to gymnastics and was the TX state champion at her level/age group last year. With all my mil moves my daughter is on her 4th school district and one of the prime reason I'm leaving the military is I'm tired of uprooting the family. All that means is I've got more than my personal QoL to consider when it comes to deciding whether I should live in domicile or commute (but I also consider the fact that Dad @ home vs. commuting adds to the overall family QoL).

If commuting to ATL, I recommend the Drury Inn on VA. Ave, close to Malones and Spons..once you get a few folks under you and get a line, then try and work the nonrev/js puzzle.

Welcome aboard, Mike. I recommend keeping the family happy and stabile in SAT and just take the hit and commute the day prior to reserve. It may cost extra bucks and one less day at home, but it eliminates the stress for you and the fam, especially during probation. You'll sleep better knowing your kids are doing well back home and I think your wife will understand if you miss a few events.

Once I got the crashpad, it increased my QOL. Nothing replaces being home but at least I had a place to hang my hat (literally). It helped me create a routine despite no real control over my life. When i was at the hotel i tried to fly all the time and got frustrated when it didn't happen. I had a great pad in ATL (same locale as above suggestion) and in MSP. It's really nice to have a car if you can swing it.
