DAL F/A Jumpseat
#101
I truly hate to reply to a thread as fraught with controversy as this one is, but has anyone considered that the FA JS is only available to DL pilots *as available* behind DL FA's? I know in most cases that the agent can slide people around, but take JFK for instance... Tons of commuters and always gamesmanship with respect to non rev, JS, etc.. You could give up your cockpit JS, only to be bumped by a FA that is executing a plan B at the last minute, which happens all the time. That's something I would really think about if it's a full boat, which it usually is. In other words, you're asking a pilot to give up a guaranteed seat for one that he could possibly be bumped off by a commuting FA...
Get burned doing that once and the "courtesy" becomes an issue.
To each their own, I understand and see both sides of this argument and wouldn't fault a guy either way.

Pretty much sums it up.
I have always been a commuting advocate, always will be. Take the walk up the the gate house look around when the airplane is full. Staunch advocate of guys taking the FA jumpseat on the forum. Same responses. I , as the captain, won't tell them what to do with "their" jumpseat. Even had one of our brave keyboard warriors, anonymously, leave a typewritten note in my v-file about how I would be dancing in front of the chief pilot if I ever forced him to the flight attendant jumpseat. Took it straight to the CPO. We then had a talk about the jumpseat. CPOs are in the corner of getting everyone on, and especially like it when you can do it and be able to explain your actions.
Also got to have a face to face with a casual acquaintance in the lounge, who told me in no uncertain terms that he wouldn't be taking the FA jumpseat ever. Guess who shows up about a month later asking for the FA jumpseat because he didn't get it reserved before another pilot. The look on his face was priceless when I turned around and he saw it was me taking the cabin jumpseat pass out of his hand. I asked him if he was SURE he wanted to ride in the cabin jumpseat. To his credit, he looked me right in the eye and said "yes", if its ok with you. True story. History is littered with the karma examples
Don't give these 10% the effort of your time, life will take care of them.

Personally I don't mind sitting on the F/A JS. No, they are not comfortable, but then either is the cockpit JS on the 757/MD88/737. When I ride on the F/A seat, I usually spend most of the flight standing up in the galley, trying to stay out of their way or help in any way I can. Sometimes it's funny to hear their stories of idiot passengers asking for all kinds of nonsense too. I know I wouldn't last 15 minutes doing their job.

Quite the opposite, he's just trying to make things crystal clear for the 10 percenters. You are arguing for the minority and that is painful to watch. Most of the guys here will display a little more humanity and humility then that.

Why would you make an extra effort to state that he was hired on the North side if not as a swipe? It certainly wasn't as a compliment.
It's also possible I overreacted. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. Please do the same for Hockey.

Hockey is a Delta pilot. True?

When I do take the F/A jump seat, I always make it clear to the off line cockpit JS'r and to the gate agent, that IF a F/A shows up last minute, I WILL be taking the cockpit JS and he's going to be SOL. Hasn't happened yet, but it's always a possibility.

I'll one up you... I have found that you can take the cushion and sit on it with your back against the door and rest you head against the indented wall and stick your feet out behind the FO. I feel less "perched" than when trying to sit sideways. Obviously ask the captain first or he might put you on the FA jumpseat...............
