I guess I am confused as to why there is such a sense of entitlement. There are 14,000+ pilots here. More than a dozen fleet types, bases, etc. In a class of 30 if your last 4 are 0001, be grateful. For fawks sake—-you are the most senior person in the class behind you.

I was hired here around 30 and will retire here with classmate who was hired mid 20s ahead of me. Who cares? I’ve got a good job, provide for my family, and was hired a couple years ago at the beginning of a huge wave.

If you don’t like the last four of the ssn for class, then apply at American??

Guess what? In the business world if you have certain traits you pass over others for promotions. Could be worse.

Its by far more fair than the current system. Ageism lawsuits are fake news; this has been and continues to be the way places do it, so its obviously not a legal issue that matters in the real world (internet fantasy world notwithstanding).

A sensible middle ground could be to base it on who interviewed first. For those on the same day, use a random number generator app. But SSN is asinine.
Victim, victimized, etc. You can use the typical buzzwords directed at millennials or younger guys or whoever that's directed at in jest. It's ironic though that it's felt that older guys should be first simply because they were born sooner. Isn't that entitlement? I thought only younger guys had that? (Sarcasm)

Ssn, lottery, etc. Random seems pretty fair, more so then arbitrary age. Especially if the younger guy is more qualified in every way except age.

In our business where seniority is everything, you are gonna get passionate responses if anyone even THINKS they are not getting a fair shake.

I think some feel that if the military assigns by age, then Delta must apply that system as well and if you disagree then you are just a ‘victim’. 😐

At my first airline job 13 years ago seniority in class was determined by age. In a class of 10, I was the youngest and therefore #10. #1 was a great guy - 55 years old who owned a few retirement homes in Phoenix but always wanted to fly so he was starting his 2nd career. Fast forward 4 years and the entire class has upgraded living the good life as an RJ captain making $65k/yr. Economy tanks, and the airline loses a home for 35 jets. 300 furloughs and 200 downgrades. Thankfully I still had a job, but the downgrade line was #2 in my class. So I go to the right seat making $35k less and pulling gear for the guy who was hired the same day I was. (With less flight experience)

I know, I know - I’m a victim of victimhood, but call a spade a spade - age alone isn’t a fair discriminator in a class.

I wouldn’t argue a system like this.

it was age in my nh class....and I was one of the younger at 29. and I'm still steaming about my college classmate being a number senior to me.

not.

30yrs downline? it hasn't made one bit of difference in my delta tenure. I suspect the ssi victims are likely to share a similar experience when its all said and done.

my comment was to poke fun at the relative absurdity of worrying about it....

Only a few of your classmates will be in your category during a 30 year career, and even then your bid priorities will differ so much you won't care.

Age was the system Delta used for years. There is a certain logic to it as retirement age is predetermined. The younger pilot will at some point in his career gain that number back. A older pilot placed behind a younger pilot stays there forever.

Thanks, I'm sure it hasn't changed in three years!

I'm not sure about that as I've seen older people who are healthier than some younger people.
