You act as if you're surprised. 2022 is going to be a war for talent among the legacies and majors as our staffing collapses. Latest example being Spirit's new minimums which target our junior FOs. Grab a cup of coffee and listen to the Titanic's string quartet, because that's probably all our mgt has in answer.

I hope the MEC has done a better job than we did recruiting FO's into union positions. We had been stagnant for so long that the union had the benefit of volunteers with years and years of experience. That isn't the case now, and if they don't start getting FO's involved early, they'll lose all the institutional knowledge that had been accumulated with nobody functional to pass it to except a newbie.

those are exactly the ones to target. That way the effort to teach and train is retained within the union the longest. Lifers are another good choice, but have limits on where you put them since you don’t want too many in leadership decision making as their career objectives are not representative of the majority. They make great committee chairman, grievance committee especially…. Not so much as LEC/MEC members. You need a few for perspective but not too many.

I agree that everyone’s interests needs to be represented but you need to have some maturity to even know what is in your best interest.

Maybe, but I don't see all these wise, mature, critical-thinking old guys volunteering.... besides, that if that young kid has the same job as the "old/wise" genius does, maybe he/she is doing something right.

No, the lifers are almost all captains and most of the young kids are still FOs. Honestly 1000 hours of 121 time may legally qualify you to be captain but there are plenty that show everyday that they don’t have the maturity. Not that age alone makes you mature. But the lifers are the ones that have figured out their time and energy is better spent on other things.

No, but the new hire young kid is exactly the one to get into a jumpseat committee, P2P volunteer, LEC Grievance committee, ASAP review or other union position where S/he can start learning how to do the internal union stuff. Expense reports, who to contact at the MEC or National, and stuff like that. Start em small and train them to succeed.
