There are very easy ways to get around going to upgrade training if you really don't want to go. Senior FOs, if they wanted to, could never upgrade and spend a perpetual cycle of senior FO and training department. Using vacation to block the start of training, bidding back to FO and then displacing to a different equipment for a new long term cycle. I'm not sure why more FOs aren't using the contract to push back against this.

I'm confused about a portion of the latest MEC Newsblast:
What exactly does that last sentence mean, that if you complete probation that you are eligible for the next 8 retention bonus windows?
Also, when are the FO retention bonuses due to expire? As I understood it was at the beginning of this year but obviously I am mistaken.
First Officer Retention Payment
The latest FO retention Bonus Window for pilots hired prior to 6/30/2016 ran from September 1 – November 30, 2017.
Reminder: you are eligible for all 8 retention payments upon completion of your probationary period (one year of service).
The latest FO retention Bonus Window for pilots hired prior to 6/30/2016 ran from September 1 – November 30, 2017.
- The FO Retention Bonus Payment for this window was required to be made no later than December 25, 2017. Your last eligibility period runs 12/1/17-2/28/18, with your last retention bonus payment coming around 3/25/18
- If you were hired after 6/30/2016, you must have completed probation (12 months) prior to 12/1/17 to be eligible for this most recent period. If you complete probation between 12/1/17 and 2/28/18 you won't be eligible until the next period starts on 3/1/18.

I think what Babs was saying is that it applies to CA’s displaced and not FO’s displaced to CA. Which, according to the contract/MEC email appears to be true.
