Take a ton of index cards. Flash cards will be very helpful for things like memory items and limitations, and answers that you have trouble remembering.

I would also recommend having a flight kit before you go, or at least have one withing the first week of training. You are going to have a lot of books and your going to need a flight kit anyway.

As soon as you check in to the hotel... put your name on a list for a fridge and a microwave. That will save you a lot of money... plus youll get tired of eating at the same 3 places.

-Basils Tavern down the street in the Sheraton has a happy hour with free food (bar food but still free).

If you rent a car from IAH Enterprise on Friday and tell them you want to return it on Sunday, you will get Sunday free (because they are not open Sunday). Thats what I used to do, but that was a long time ago.

I hope that policy survives the integration!

They got rid of casual Fridays.

General advice at any airline IMHO.....Cooperate to graduate ...Hope your partner does not leave every weekend to go home so he will study with you ... Yes weekends are great to unwind but its nice to have someone there to study a little on weekends even if its just a few hours .. Buy the basic uniforms cause you can buy additional items later and a lot cheaper in most cases .
be a team player . My experience elsewhere is people size each other up to decide who to sim with....if they let you choose .... remember the highest time guy may not be the best partner.

This is my opinion your mileage may vary but I believe most guys would agree..

YOU ARE ALL FOOLS!

My lad, if you want to make the perfect impression, just show up naked.

I promise you will never, ever be forgotten in the annals of aviation lore. Yea the guy or gal who dared and bared to be different. Use a towel to sit on while in class, and all that other stuff, like take notes, etc. you want to do that.

And, if anyone asks you why are you naked, ask them, why are you clothed?

ALL the best!!!!

They used to years ago but I'm not sure if they still do with all the changes to our pass travel on CAL. Might be something to ask about when you get there since I'm sure the situation is changing frequently.

As far as training advice, there are probably 2 things you can do that will make your life tons easier:

1) Know the flows and profiles COLD. Knowing what to do and when to do it is half the battle. You'll figure out the why as you go through training.

2) Find another guy or small group of like-minded guys/gals that you can study with and bounce questions off of and cut loose with when time permits. What I mean is you don't want to study with the dumb guy/party animal who expects you to carry them and you don't want to get stuck with the super intense, hard core, nitpicky guy who tends to overwhelm themselves (unless that's your style?).

I'm not sure if they still do this or not but when I went through, near the end of indoc (week 1) they walked everyone over to the "stopover store" in the airport to shop for binders, flightkits, luggage and anything else someone new to the airline world might need. Good chance to see what's out there. You can try finding cheaper binders at office supply stores but 6 ring jepp-style binders are tough to find. Chartcases are sold at office stores as "catalog cases" but I've found they are less durable than ones designed for the rigors of airline life. Ask questions of guys who have been around a while about what works, what's nice but not necessary and what's just junk.

And forget the tie. No one expects you to wear it and it doesn't prove anything to anyone. Your performance on the tests and in the sim/ftd and your attendance in class are all that are evaluated. To the best of my knowledge there is no box on the training forms for "Did applicant wear a tie?".

Oh, and definitely say "woot" every chance you get. :P

No PS home anymore, unfortunately. Pack for 7 weeks. You will probably get your company ID by the 2nd week and that will allow you to jumpseat, but if you don't make it back.. you're screwed!

I started on the 3rd and they required business casual... half way through the second week they changed the policy. You can now wear jeans but they still want to see a collared shirt.

Instructors are great! They told us that they're planning to hire 32/month indefinitely. Great news! We still haven't been officially assigned to a base yet, but we've been told to expect ORD. Lots of rumors going around about a DEN base opening. The CAL arbitration threw everything for a loop and a lot of details seem to be up in the air.

Good luck to you!
