Not everyone knows this yet. I did this the other day and got a lecture how I was doing it wrong and needed to wait until we are aligned with the runway....fun times. The guy even after looking it up in the FOM, said with the FSM says to do it when aligned. Looks it up, doesn't address it anywhere. Proceeds to keep lecturing.
This is a recurring problem. Things change, someone doesn't get the memo, so when you do it the new way, you get a 20 minute lecture on how you are doing it wrong.

It's not a "requirement" as in, you can't be violated if you don't use it. But aligning your FOM with what's in AIM is a common practice. Pretty sure most airlines have it in their FOM. I know the 3 operators I've flown for did, even though in reality hardly anyone says it.
