There was an ANC MD-11 slot in my new hire class last year so you may get it right away if you come in as a MD guy. Otherwise, you might have to wait for a vacancy bid. I haven't seen one yet (I'm new) so not sure how available it'll be. Apparently they happen once a year roughly in the spring. With that said, if you get it from the vacancy bid, it could be a while (months, years) before you actually get moved. Folks with more time here can probably shed a lot more light on this than me.

On the commuting front, I met a Captain who commuted in from India (yes, the country). So I suspect you can make it work from just about anywhere. Commuter friendly airline is one of the major perks of FedEx. Something like 80% of the pilots commute.

Close. Completion of IOE.

Pay: 1st day of bid period one year from date of hire.

Probation: 1 year from activation which is completion of IOE.

Close. Probation: 1 year from LOE (type rating check ride). I'm only confident of this because it hasn't been that long ago for me. LOE mid September of '15, completed IOE first part of October. My probation ended mid September '16. Not a big deal, but a difference of about 3 weeks.

And yes, pay is based on hire month, not training or activation.

You're right. Beer on me. The seat lock clock is activation I believe. Oh well. Home with the flu. Back to sleep.

I know him...and he is India now. Spends a good bit of time there. I am hoping to visit sometime soon with my family.

He has a big announcement pending...

Shack. One of my biggest professional satisfactions is seeing captains get the chance to fly with their son or daughter. Lost count of how many times I've had the chance to help, but it is always an awesome feeling to see matching names on the board in the AOC (or in the case of a married daughter at least know the names once matched!

Got to help a few husband/wife teams as well.

I like seeing an airline become a family business...
