If you don't leave the flight deck or the shadow of the aircraft turning the turn, does that mean it's not a hub turn?

If you fly somewhere, land, wait a couple of hours for them to swap the "stuff" in the back and fly somewhere else.... isn't that essentially a hub turn, or am I missing something?

ANC guys routinely fly:
KIX-PEK-ICN
ICN-CAN-ICN
KIX-HKG-TPE
KIX-NRT-TPE
ICN-NRT-KIX
HKG-KIX-TPE

There's also BLR-BOM-DXB and the JIB turns out of BAH are back.

While no cargo gets unloaded and they're usually quick turns, the flights between TPE and CAN with a tech stop in CRK are still rampant throughout the bid pack.

On the Euro side of things there's CDG-CGN-CDG.

On the 777 we're routinely flying from Japan to PVG and back as well as some of the same hub turns the ANC -11 guys fly in Asia and Europe. In addition, we're doing MXP-CDG-STN, MXP-FRA-CDG and even have a three leg night CGN-CDG-MUC-FRA.

My point is that going to the ANC MD-11 or 777 to avoid hub turning my be an option if your seniority allows, you're not going to avoid them simply by virtue of being assigned to those aircraft. There's not a fleet at Fedex that doesn't have some form of hub turns in their bid pack, IMO.
How senior do you have to be to do "one leg to the hotel" trips?

Very long-time lurker, first time poster; thanks to all that post valuable & cogent info. Got the CJO a few weeks ago and eagerly await a class date. I am the proud recipient of a very low last 4 of the SSN so I kinda know what my initial bidding power will be. I'm just hoping my priorities and those of my indoc classmates are not in sync.

I think I have a grasp of the whole crash pad issue, and most of my other burning questions have been answered both in these forums and thru FedEx buds. However, I have a question regarding keeping an airport beater car there in MEM. Does the vehicle need to be registered in TN or is it the owner's home state?

Thanks

[QUOTE=Adlerdriver;2299244]I guess there must be varying shades of "hub turn" definitions out there.

KIX-HKG-TPE
KIX-NRT-TPE
ICN-NRT-KIX
HKG-KIX-TPE

Adler I guess my point was I never did a week (or month for that matter) of KIX-PEK-ICN or ICN-NRT-KIX, etc. Do you fly multiple legs per duty period sometimes on the -11 in ANC? Of course you do (more than I liked actually). Do you do an entire month of it? Never in my 9 years there. My point was if you want to avoid hub turning (as most of us define it, e.g. one or two legs into MEM, sit 3 hours, one or two legs out, all week long) then the -11 in ANC is a good option. Did not mean to imply it's always easy, it's just different. Cheers.

No, you don't have to register it in TN. You can just register it in your home state. At least that is what I did and have had no problems. Judging by the many many different license plates I see in the lot, I'm not the only one.

I kept my airport car registered in my home state for 18 years. For much of that time I was able to avoid paying home state auto taxes because it was "garaged out of state." I was also able to avoid required home state safety & emissions testing (although it likely would have passed).

It depends on the crash pad location. The Olive Branch police used to cruise known crash pads for out of state plates and ticket them. Could be an urban legend but ask your slum lord.

That's not necessarily an aspect of trips desired by everyone, so it would be difficult to put a seniority limit on it. It's more a function of fleet.

The long haul fleets are going to have the most single flight per duty period trips. LAX/ANC MD-11 and 777 MEM would be the best options. HKG 767 has some too. Unless you want HKG, 777 is probably best for someone junior since LAX and ANC are relatively senior bases and long haul goes senior on the -11 in MEM. RFO trips are almost 100% single flight per day and generally speaking tend to go senior, especially on the 777. However, there are many FO trips with at least some (sometimes all) of the duty periods with a single flight.

It's not common to find a trip in the short haul fleets that's exclusively one flight per duty period. There are a few, but it's more common to have that happen occasionally in a trip but not every duty period. Some short haul trips fly one leg to a long layover (24+) and back. Those trips can't be scheduled efficiently, so if they're all like that in a line, then the line is strung out through the month with dead space between trips. Maybe okay for a local pilot, but not very popular with commuters. The typical domestic week on/week off schedule commuters like will not have single flights to the hotel (except for day one).

So, long answer - if you want one leg to the hotel, I'd say your best shot to get it on a fairly regular basis is in MEM on the 777.

Default Quick off-topic question...

Not intending to hijack the thread from new hire fleet gouge, but looking for a new hire quick vector...

Pending military retiree facing SBP decision. Does the company/union/etc offer any term/whole policies in conjunction with employment/membership?

If so, where can I get more info about the options?

Thanks in advance!
