CFI jobs don't pay well and often offer absolutely no benefits. People with that kind of experience leave for better jobs. Also all CFIs have to start somewhere. If you think you can walk into any flight school and not find a handful of brand new CFIs you're in for a surprise.

Give the guy a chance. Tell him why you dislike his style rather than questioning his qualifications on an Internet forum. No matter how much you think he's unqualified remember that you're still probably two full time years from even being as qualified as he is.

to me, that is a BIG read flag.

DO you think it is a good idea putting a first year teacher in teaching instrument ground? Especially in one of the most vital ratings of our careers in flying.
This guy doesn't really teach, he is only playing the jeppesen videos and we read the chapter and do the questions at the end of the book.

I feel like i am wasting money on a terrible college experience, with a crummy ground teacher.

It does seem like he knows what he is talking about, he just can't teach..and he sounds like he isn't an authoritative figure, i feel like i can take of advantage of him easily.
I wouldn't trust this guy with my life in IFR conditions.

Before you get on here and start criticizing someone maybe look in the mirror, oh and proof read your posts.

FYI its RED, not read

you come on here complaining, why not take action, your in charge of your own destiny and if your unhappy then you need to take it to the right people. This forum has little sympathy for 100 hour wonder pilots who think they got it all figured out.

I got my AGI and IGI before I got the CFI and taught private, instrument, and commercial ground school with a commercial. We all start somewhere. In a perfect world you would be required to be an airline captain with 20 plus years of experience to get a CFI. And you'd have modern working equipment - not a beat up old 150.

Instructing makes you better because you discover that you better know the material. If this person is lacking to some degree, hopefully this first teaching experience will encourage him to hone his skills. I've also been a FL middle school teacher and I can tell you I'd rather shoot approaches all day at ORD to mins, than stand in front of 8th graders all day long. Teaching is a tough gig to begin with.

I am studying the material (barely passing) and this guy just can't teach[/QUOTE]

Buckle down and get off the forums. I finished at UVU while working full time. I have 2 college age sons now. I know what I am talking about.

Would you recomemd taking the IGI and CFII written at same time? It's still the same questions right? I am going back 20 plus years when I did the same thing. Take the FOI and walk into a FSDO and become a grnd instr with no oral. Easy Peasy.

Over the course of my flight training, I was fortunate enough to work with experienced CFI's with thousands of hours as well as newly-minted ones still with temporary certificates. As others have said, don't be so quick to judge based on the length of time spent teaching.

I'll take an enthusiastic, interested, new teacher over a jaded 'experienced' one any day. Even at the 121 level, some of the most productive sim sessions I've done are with individuals training to be sim instructors and just feeling out their teaching methods.

Best of luck with your training......I'm sure you'll do fine as long as you keep an open mind those you come into contact with.

You should be studying outside resources on your own, any way....."Weather Flying" by Robert Buck, "Instrument Flying" by Richard Taylor....etc.

When I took instrument ground school, I read ahead. I also sat in the back of the class, and having read ahead, spent the class time reading the next chapter, treating the class as "enforced study time" as the teacher was boring. But I was also listening, and getting reinforcement/reiteration on areas that needed clarification. But when he asked a question, I usually had the answer, or when I had a question, it was a good one, while it was obvious many hadn't read the chapter at all. Makes you look like a genius...

I agree with the above poster about the new instructor....The private student who is the FIRST zero-hour student of a new CFI will often get more dedicated, thorough, exacting, and loving attention than you would think...

You make your own luck. Depend on yourself, but get the sign-off and the credits.
But give the guy a break, he DOES know more than you.... your job is to turn the tables in one semester.

I took my CFII and IGI when I took the instrument written. Yes, same bank of questions, and I was intent on becoming a CFII down the road.

I don't know if I'd waste the money on IGI unless you 1) cannot afford your CFII and 2) have a job offer teaching instrument ground that requires an IGI.

Having the AGI/IGI on your certs is meaningless as far as your career goes, and even more meaningless if you have flight instructor ratings. The money is better spent on beer or hookers.

Why do you think I was on the 20 yr program??

The IGI costs very little, test fees only, no check ride and resume 'fluff' when not a lot to show. If the OP is having a tough time with the materal, take the test while the info is fresh from an instrument GS. I think having the AGI and IGI are preq for eventually working towards a GOLD SEAL CFI.
