737 Type - Higher Power or CPT
#11
Grumble: Thanks. Good point. I don't have job with SWA, and I do not have an ATP. I do have $10,333 each year for 3 years (Post 9/11 VA). Options are an ATP in a light twin, or a type. 737NG type is $10,500, so, the 737NG is within the budget so to speak, and gets me at least into an ATP with the added value of the type on a modern AC. Appreciate any advice on this. Hoping someday to get FO job with Major/SW at ORD/MDW.

The knock I heard on HPA (granted, this was from the gentleman who runs CPT) was that HPA doesn't care about you, it's just a business that wants your money. I found that to be not the case. From day one, HPA seemed to care a lot, including helping out with the GI Bill paperwork ahead of time. They are a business, sure, but they are very good at what they do.
Looking back though, I think more importantly is the airline ground school atmosphere and the connections I made with my classmates. I could have done a class of 4 guys from my squadron at CPT, but instead I now have a dozen friends from regionals and all branches of the military who I wouldn't have met before.
+1 for Higher Power

With regards to using your GI Bill at HPA --
1. Is the expectation to front to $10K upfront , THEN get reimbursed by the VA --
*or*
2. Does HPA fill out the paperwork, you do the training, and the VA pays them dircetly.
Basically - what liquid assets do you need to front to HPA on Day 1.

+ 1 for CPT
Ray & his staff will take care of you. You'll be running into HPA students at the training center thinking, "I'm glad I didn't get my butt kicked for the same type rating."

+2 for CPT. I did mine back in 2006 or so. Ray and Mitch were absolutely great to work with. I can't say anything bad about Higher Power, but at CPT, it was 1 instructor with 2 students and a LOT of 1-on-1 instruction. No classrooms, no CBTs, no frilly socials.
