Like most people, I root for my favorite team, even if I know the facts are that they are outgunned and/or have falling way behind. And while facts are facts, funny things can and do happen. Sometimes the other team misses a “cinch” field goal. Sometimes truly bizarre things happen, like everyone ignoring what they think is a dead ball and the game changing drastically when someone just scoops up the ball to hand it back to the ref:

There is no denying how hard the Ukrainians are fighting and what they have done so far despite the odds against them. And there is nothing wrong with hoping that they will prevail despite the odds against them. But it would be foolish to deny the reality of the factors against them, or that when this all gets settled, they are STILL going to share a long border with Russia.

It’s no game, quite agree. You’re no Russian false flag either, imo. The border shared is under siege & occupation, duh A once stately Capital, routinely targeted by missile, drone, rocket units. Over the course of 10 years in fact regular Russian troops, Russian backed separatists, a variety of 3rd world mercenaries have subjected Ukraine’s impoverished, decimated civilians to every possible terror but gas & of course their impressive stockpile of Soviet era nuclear weapons/launch platforms. The stated objective, securing Kremlin autonomy from foreign threats, farcical. But much as German Volk suffered the vengeful punishment for Nazi horrors in defeat, Russia herself must at all costs hold against global liability/judgement for what they’ve done. Fallout from which will remain contentiously hot for the rest of this generation and likely the next. So, imho, 1st order of business; summit. Z and Putin, face to face. Go from there. You could suggest a quiet table at an Italian cafe in Brooklyn. Tape a piece behind the toilet in back then shoot Lavrov in the throat, Putin in the forehead. But they’ve probably seen the film.

Default Money makes the world go around…

although Cabaret is pretty dated now it’s still an amusing play. Not so much funding a war.

https://www.politico.eu/article/neth...raine-defense/

it looks like - unless there is something of a sudden breakthrough, Ukraine is going to need more than the €90 Billion loan the EU just approved (although haven’t yet disbursed) now that the Druzhba pipeline is repaired and Hungary and Slovakia are ceasing to block it. Unfortunately that €90 Billion number was based on the assumption that there would be a settlement in the war before 2027 which is still looking pretty iffy. And with the EU economy not doing all that well even before the Hormuz shutdown eyes are turning again to the impounded Russian funds.

But this threatens to reopen the conflicts that stopped that funding source the first time. Since the decision requires a consensus and Belgium - where most of the funds are held - is adamantly opposed to using the funds without being indemnified from potential legal repercussions, it may be “deja vu all over again” as Yogi Berra would have said.

Excerpts:

Reviving the discussion over Russian assets risks reopening a fraught legal, commercial and political debate late last year that saw Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever stare down the European Commission over concerns that his country would be on the hook to repay the billions of Russian funds housed in Brussels if Moscow attempted to claw back the money. The likes of Bulgaria, France, Italy and Malta also harbored concernsover the European Commission's proposal to use the frozen state assets to fund Ukraine, while the European Central Bank consistently warned that tapping the immobilized funds could deter other governments from doing business in the eurozone.

Heinen's push comes even though Brussels has yet to send a single euro from a €90 billion loan, backed by the EU budget, that 24 EU leaders agreed on in December to provide Kyiv over the next two years. The loan will only cover two-thirds of Ukraine's forecasted budget shortfall until 2027.

Kyiv’s budget shortfall was forecast to be around €71 billion this year and €64 billion in 2027. That estimate, however, assumes that the war will end this year, a prospect that few believe will materialize.

Uncertainty is always a reality in war. And pretty much anytime you are dependent on feckless allies.

So far the 3 day ceasefire and prisoner exchange appears to be holding.

This is not about allies. It’s about russia invading Ukraine, murdering it’s people, and you supporting of all of that with four years of positive postings.

The feckless allies are the Europeans who let NATO deterrence fail by 35+ years of underfunding their own militaries and are now giving LOANS instead of grants while CONTINUING to underfund their militaries.
