Correct, but the Captain, in this instance, was wrong. He doesn't have to ask for permission. He doesn't own the flowback seats, the gate does.

Cool story, bro. Far be it from a pilot to actually be personable and try to engage the passengers.

If you're jumpseating, check in up front. It's at the least the respectful thing to do... at most carriers it is still required (as it should be if you're the least bit mindful of history).

And, yes, it is lame to put on a show in the gate area. You have an opportunity to great the passengers at the door while boarding or making an announcement or even, as I've seen done, giving a little brief every 10 rows. Whatever, you're the king in the tube for the day. It seems a little neurotic doing it in the gate area.

Do you think it was appropriate when the guy just said "I'm with xxx airline I got a seat in the back" and just hands the CA a JS for to sign with no "my name is....." To me it sounds like " Hey I'm JSing, sign this"

No he's not, the pilot was required to fill out a JS form, and had to get the CA to sign it. If he didn't feel like "asking" he's more than welcome to buy a ZED and go straight to his seat.

Got that beat, 135 freight dude comes up and says "I'm up here with you". I've never heard of his company so I look it up in the FOM. Nope, no recip.
"But I've got CASS, so I'm good".
I told him if he could talk the gate into giving him a seat in the back, he was welcome to it but not up front if he's not on the list.
"But it was sold out, my company couldn't buy me a seat so they told me to JS to my next position."
