I'm a captain at a mainland regional and was in the 2012 pool. I have two internal recs and have been invited to interview again in October. Wonder where I truly stand?

Vacancy bid cancelled... all bets are off. As someone above said, "always subject to change"

Are you serious?? If true, that is worse than Mesa hiring practices.

Certainly not a Kool aide drinker, voted against the last contract mainly because the scope clause and vacation pay issues were just wrong. The union leadership has a long way to go to improve things. Never said the hiring practices were great, just prefer to work on issues that help the pilots already here.

As for the next bid... yes, sure we can likely still have new hires... in a game of hopes, I prefer to lower mine and be pleasantly surprised. The words "Cancelled" block horus doesn't give me the warm and fuzzy for more pilots, but hey.... i could be wrong, and I certainly hope I am. Either way, I want to apologize on my part for anyone who wasted time, money, and possibly put their current job at risk to come out and interview if we do infact not hire those 14, or 10 I guess... |
btw, It merits to state (since some feel I've been entirely too critical)..
Hawaiian is a great place to work for the most part, and factoring in how old our CBA is.. it's only going to get better, and this pilot group seems determined to get their's back after a decade of give backs.. Hawaiian has some of the coolest people i've ever worked with, and truly a fun place to work. I never dread walking into the crew room because I always meet a friend.. from the most senior captain to the most junior FO. I love the pilot support staff.. the Chief Pilots secretaries are both saints and always happy to deal with us pilots and our problems! The guys who volunteer their time at the lowest levels, do so out of their love for the company and this translates to a happy work place. We fly a great and well maintained fleet of jets, to some of the nicest destinations... There are no horrid layovers, only different degrees of good. We offer the ability to be an airline pilot and be home every night... Very few Legacy airlines have anything like Inter Island. We have an interesting mix of culture... Asian, White, Hawaiian, and guys literally from everywhere ... all 6 continents.. It is a great job, and good place to work. Is it perfect?? Far from it.. are we all trying to make it a better place? I'm sure of it. Do we all have the same vision for what this should look like? No...but that is no different than if you were at Delta, United, Spirit, Jet Blue, or Allegiant... they all have their infighting, they all have their Koolaid drinkers and their critics... I understand that it's easier to get hired at Fedex than Hawaiian, and that for some its their life long dream... that's both good and bad. It's good because when you get it, you feel you won the lottery.. The bad is.. you feel like you won the lottery and you begin to wear the HAL issued Revo Rose frames.. |
As someone who just yesterday received confirmation of an interview date, then first thing this morning see a post stating: "vacancy bid canceled," wonder if someone could try to provide some clarity here? Thanks loads.

There is a chance, that the vacancy bid changes fleet mix, not the need to hire into Interisland... lets hope that's the case. You should continue to truck along until something official comes down. |
OK, appreciate it brother.

Heard Sean Menke is over there now. Is it true?

Yes Opinions? |
When does your current CBA expire?

This is why we'll likely have to take it all the way with the NMB before we get what we deserve. |

Two might be a coincidence. Good luck number three. I want to be at Hawaiian so I hope he's not still a Delta puppet looking to chop something up for a future fire sale. |
Looks like potentially good news for the new hires... The new bid is out and they STILL show 14 new hires..
Seems the major change was less 767 and 717 flying and more A330... depending on how many bid off the 717 (at least 10 have to) they might have to hire into the A330 maybe... |
Is it still for a May 2015 date? I was hoping it would cover more new hires.
I have 2 LOR's on file just got a third one today. But I may have missed the dance. Nothing else I could do. I live on mainland but have family on Oahu, volunteer on island multiple X's a year. |

You guys are lucky to have him in my opinion. He was the right guy for Pinnacle but he didn't want to be a Delta puppet. We was in the process of making all the right adjustments to contracts and returning the company to profitability when Delta pulled the run from under him and basically told him they would not pay what they agreed to pay unless we stopped flying for everyone except Delta. All that combined with a very expensive pilot integration is what caused Pinnacle to go into bankruptcy. Sean got out when he when he saw Delta wanted him to be a "yes" man and he did not want to be that guy.

It's no surprise that HAL has more applicants than jobs....and the reality is that managers are going to great lengths to ensure that the hiring process is truly fair, if not genuinely transparent. It is point based, but I don't know if points are given for being related to a current pilot, etc. Maybe if a captain has worked there 30 years and guided his kid through the ratings and building experience process, that's worth something. I think that a rec may help you get the interview, but beyond that the obligation is entirely on YOU, no matter who you are.
The reality is these current openings are just for attrition...IF, and it's a big IF, the 321s are delivered as scheduled, and 76s are retired, there will be a larger number of new hires. Let's hope in the meantime that someone doesn't try to merge, acquire, or take over this gem of an airline. If they do, they'll all be sucking wind...... By the way, I think they've hired their last captain for a long while some time ago if they anticipate a 1000 pilot airline....for what it's worth. |

Brudda,
My bet is Antartica...I hear the penguins love a break in the sun and sand! |
Actually with about 600 pilots now and maybe a hundred or so retiring in the next 5 years, the 2020 projection of 1,000 pilots means about everyone here today will have the chance to upgrade by 2020.
|
Scheduled retirements are fewer, although some will surely retire before age 65. Even so, new hires should realize that the upgrade will be a fair ways off...

Anyone who's been flying longer than a few years should ALWAYS know that projections usually fall well short. I'd argue with as young many of our captains are, and as young as many senior FO's are... if you're bottom 10-20% of this list, you're an FO for 15, maybe more years.. |
While I'm not sure anyone at Koapaka has a crystal ball that can see out more than a few days, I do think 321 flying will impact interisland flying. At this point no one can tell to what degree it will reduce the 71 schedule, but it's a safe bet it will. And I'm also betting that ALL the 76s will be retired when enough 321s arrive on property. There should still be a net increase in pilots...let's see....16 321s x 12 pilots each is 192...minus say 10 76s at 120 pilots is a net increase of 72, plus 2 additional 330s 2nd half of 2015 is another 24...so 96 total net before 717 block hour reductions due to 321 flying. So that would take the list to roughly 700.....the 1000 number must be if all options are exercised.
|
So the whole interview process is now a one day, 5 hour process? It's no longer a 3 phase process, with the 3rd phase happening weeks later?

First thing that happened is JS from Mesaba was the new CEO then he was replaces by an all Delta management team. Just my .02 cents. |

After the Comair pres was ousted after our Christmas ice storm debacle in 2004ish, Former Delta execs started showing up.. Starting with Fred Butrell, and I think it became a revolving door of Delta people...( I left before all of that) All these airline execs play musical chairs with airline jobs... Unfortunately very few are any good at what they do.... |
Has anyone received an email or call yet from this last window?

rumors have it 50 got calls for interviews. It also sounds like that may be all that are called for quite a while. No magic formula to who gets called. Some have no/ little connections to company and little time, others have a lot of time and a lot of connections....some get called some don't. I have knocked on about every door I know there many times, family on island, volunteer there, 3 recs, a lot of time and no call.
I am hopeful a call will come soon! But not going to hold my breath for one. Good Luck! Even those that are there don't really know any secrets. |
Got the TBNT Letter today. Better luck next time.

Ditto. It seems to be a rite of passage in this industry but that doesn't make getting one any easier...especially when you're unemployed and need a job. Hope you find a good situation soon.
Bro, You want to leave Atlas for HAL? I thought I read recently about HAL pilots leaving FOR Atlas (may have been FedEx). Is it bad over there, because most of the pilots I've talked with seem to enjoy Atlas. I'm trying to work at HAL and I didn't get anything positive or negative from the latest window. I travelled to PHNL a few weeks ago and was able to get a couple of recommendations from line pilots. Best time ever bro! I probably need some more experience but I think eventually i hope to make it in when the competition is less steep in the next two yrs. I heard of guys flying inter-island medivac stuff who made it in without flying anything larger than turboprops. Maybe that's the ticket. Peace |
