Last couple of new hire classes-percentage locals vs those from the mainland?

nodoubt 06-10-2013 10:53 AM

Rumor is June 20th class. Any truth to this? How many in the class?

Haven't heard a date, but heard the same

that would coincide well with the opening of the new HQ and the new school house.... the first class to see it. I'm going thru 330 initial now and we're the last class to see the old classrooms... I might also be the first one to get to use the new sim... that's pending FAA approval... being told to stay tuned.

As for the class.... sad to say I haven't heard anything about it. I infact heard a rumor (not very credible) that they cancelled the latest class.

No news on a window either.

btw.. the new HQ is amazing.. state of the art, and designed with the latest and greatest technology. There will even be an original art display that rotates in the central hall where the main entrance will be. They also will have a fancy company only cafeteria. Press releases should be out around the later part of the month.

CATIII 06-13-2013 05:28 PM

confirmed a class of 3 (possible 2) in 717 on June 20.... rumor is no more hiring rest of the year.

NoJoy 06-13-2013 06:03 PM

Do they have enough pilots to cover the upcoming increased rest rules for January 2014?

From what I can see. Based on our route structure and current scheduling, we won't need any extra. The new rules are more help for the commuter airlines than anyone else.

hnldave 06-14-2013 11:06 PM

word has it that we will hire 40-50 this year. a bid should be coming out in a few weeks, which will paint a clearer picture for the near term.

That would be welcome news. I just hope they open the window again. I missed the last one while deployed and have been kicking myself ever since.

I still don't understand why some airlines do that. There are always cases where people can't get it in during the window that are legitimate, i.e. deployed and didn't hear about it. It seemed like every 6 months or something would be reasonable.

kingairfun 06-16-2013 08:55 PM

So we have no hiring, continued hiring, maybe a class of 3... (BTW the list of 3 has been posted in ops)...

In summary: we have no real clue:D

My recurrent had us keeping 596 longer than planned....

update: i hear that there will be a few downgrades and no hiring on the next vacancy bid. we should have more info when it comes out next weekish. total bummer.

captfurlough 06-24-2013 07:47 AM

The original intent of the bid was to account for growth in 2014...for which they would have to start interviewing, hiring, and training later this year. We've heard all sorts of numbers....from the downgrades mentioned above, to hiring as many as 100. All of these were probably correct at one time, but the company's own plans appear uncertain, delaying the bid. One thing's for sure; they continue to look at additional routes, and ultimately this will require additional staffing. Any bid published now will likely see another in 2 or 3 months.

Downgrades affecting the 76? or 71? They're still doing transition classes on the 330 last I saw, right?

any chance of FO displacements occurring?

Any Idea when the window will open?

I think that boat sailed back in 2010.... I'll be happy if a small pet door opens at this time.

Right now we're going through a slower than the last few years period. Disposing of 767 and gaining a330's. but only outpacing the disposals by a few airplanes.

If all works out I assume the next " wave" of hiring could be shortly before the a321's arrive. Say around 2016 or sooner if the a /c arrive sooner.

Then there's always hiring for attrition. Slow but steady attrition

Has the vacancy bid come out yet?

negative. when i had the conversation with the man in charge of the bids nearly 3 weeks ago, he said that the vacancy bid was ready to be published. he reiterated that the marketing department was changing their minds constantly regarding schedules/routes/frequencies. im just hoping the reason for the delay is good news for the pilot group.

Thanks for the update - Keep 'em coming!:D

Any potential phase 3 invites in the near future?

AlohaFlyer 07-21-2013 11:34 PM

I heard a rumor from a good source at HA, that the company is actively looking for A320's to lease and bring on property early while we wait for the A321neo's to be built. That would surely spur some growth.

Any idea what for? I was under the impression the A321s were for West Coast flying and maybe 1 or 2 dense inter-island markets. But A320s aren't ETOPS...

I've got no idea about A320's ETOPS, or how quickly they could get them certified (maybe throw in a 180+ minute cargo fire supression system if needed?)..

But I've been thinking that it stinks that places like Alaska have more flights from the West Coast than we do and there is nothing we can do about competing with them until the NEO arrives in 3 more years..

And how it would be nice to get something on lease a bit sooner to compete with that until the NEO's arrive. An additional 3 years is a long time to lose West Coast market share.

Not sure how possible it would all be. I don't have the big marketing/ monetary/decision making picture. Just a pilot who doesn't like seeing AS heading to HNL,OGG,KOA, LIH from the next gate over.

In other news, several analyst still predict better financials for HA going forward as we hedge against the supressed YEN, available seats to the West Coast, and the growing pains of 20+% expansion for the last 3 years. 2QT2013 financials released June 23rd.

Any phase 3s lately?

AlohaFlyer 08-09-2013 04:09 PM

Not right now... There is a group of guys that passed phase III who probably won't get a class this year.... It's slowed down for a bit.

Any idea of what the average person has as far as hours/type thats getting interviews? I have three pilot family members that work for hal, about 3700hrs , 2000 as a crj fo. Born and raised maui boi. Havent heard anything. Is the lack of 121 pic whats holding me back?

Hawaiian hires anything and everything in terms of experience.... I've posted it before, but my class ranged for age 50, several major/legacy airlines on their resume and 10+ types, widebody, international, etc... to age 26, FAR 135 Shorts and nothing else..

Who you know is a big part is lowering the exp requirements, but from the looks of it, you've got that covered VERY nicely...

So the short answer is.. I'm not sure what would be holding you back, other than there are only so many jobs for so many applicants..

The most senior pilot check airman (and APD) who I just finished IOE with has a son trying to get hired as well, and he's got about the same resume as you. What he told me is HAL tries to hire the gamut so they can get the experience they need for a rapidly expanding global airline, while at the same time trying as much as possible to keep it in the family and help out those with family and friends on the Islands wanting to get hired on.. it's a balance he said.

AlohaFlyer 08-13-2013 10:48 AM

I would agree with what CatIII said... you're right in the ball park... a few months back I had a conversation with our Chief Pilot (KM) and he mentioned that they need at least 2500 flight hours to be competitive... the more Jet time the better. PIC is nice but its not a hard and fast rule at Hawaiian as to needing that at all. They really like RJ time from the mainland... from places like ExpressJet, SkyWest, ASA, Pinnacle, etc... because it exposes guys to glass cockpit, international ops, Jet aircraft... etc... but they tend to hire lots of guys that never upgraded in those type of operations or only did for a short time. This is not to say that they don't also take guys from TurboProp operators too... like Horizon or Island Air. Its a big point system and every thing you have adds to your points. Just hang in there... stay positive and motivated and your number will come up eventually.

Aloha

Any updates on the status of hiring? All my buddies are getting picked up left and right and I'm still holding out for HAL waiting for a phase 3 email/call invite..interviewed Oct. 2012

SkyBird17 08-27-2013 04:23 PM

Thanks for the info bro! Definitely gonna wait. There where some confusing emails that went out mid November. I got an email saying my application will remain under review and some got the thanks but no thanks letter. Still kinda grey on the status. Hopefully no news is good news...

Resume Update

I'm waiting for a phase III and recently have acquired an A320 type rating which I would think would be of value. Is there a way to update my information on file or does it even matter?

I'm in the same boat as you........been waiting for Phase III since last year and I've since added an A320 type. I'm assuming for me I've probably been flushed out and will have to start over.

That's a very good assumption. I've interviewed twice and as much as I would love the job, life goes on. I'm gonna stick to my current job and when the opportunity comes up again for Hawaiian, I'm going to try for a third time. Maybe that will be the charm:).
