Apparently FedEx called and the simple math of overall career progression/expectation/compensation made the decision a numbers game.

A quick glance @ airlinepilotcentral.com's at rates may be an eye opener. I don't have hard numbers, but I could only guess how many 30-ish 1st year FOs on 1st year pay @ HA would pass on chance @ FedEx.

that is what happened.... people generally don't come to HAL for type ratings and quit.. This was a rare and special case. Moreover, I believe that guy was from the Islands to begin with.

Good luck to the 31 guys that interviewed for Phase II today. Now the wait begins.

PizzaBoy 11-30-2012 06:12 PM

What about the 14 who did Phase III on Tues? No good luck for us? :)

tikicarver 11-30-2012 06:45 PM

So what did they tell you guys about future classes and hiring plans?

Shifty 11-30-2012 07:48 PM

Good luck Pizzaboy! 40 more slots to fill is what the cp said. Good luck everyone!

PizzaBoy 12-01-2012 02:10 AM

Thank you Shifty. And good luck to you!

kingairfun 12-03-2012 09:57 AM

Hawaiian just announced Taiwan service starting next July.....

EnergyManager 12-12-2012 11:22 PM

To anyone in the know, what happens during phase three? Do they offer employment right then and there if you pass, or are you contacted at a later time? What is the method of contact and do they want an answer right then?

Thanks in advance.

PizzaBoy 12-13-2012 04:03 AM

2 more personality inventories, logbook/doc review, and drug test. Was there about 4hrs. Received an email about a week and a half later welcoming me to the Hawaiian family!

Good Luck

Congrats PizzaBoy! Did they give class dates out yet? Any word on aircraft?

PizzaBoy 12-15-2012 03:40 AM

Thank you. BEYOND excited! No class date but we were told during Phase III probably mid-Jan to early Feb? Nothing on the a/c either, but I'll fly a 172 if they want! :)

Rama 12-15-2012 08:29 AM

There's a class starting Dec. 27th. About 10 or 11 in it.

skicapt 12-16-2012 07:18 AM

Anyone have a guess when the next Phase III is planned?

CATIII 12-16-2012 08:52 AM

they're held about one a month, but once we get the magic number of about 100 total hired from that last window, they will open a new window and the process will start again, all prior Phase II's will have to re-apply.

Word from the last phase III was that Dr. Farkas is taking the month of December off for vacation. That probably means no phase III's till January.

swamp 12-16-2012 06:27 PM

Any idea if they are doing any initial (phase I) interviews in the near future from the last hiring window? Recieved the, your application will remain under further consideration email, then months later got the infamous, interview invite email, to only get the email 30 min later explaining that the invite email was a mistake. Just wondering if they are still doing phase I invites? Thanks.

Walter White 12-22-2012 09:17 AM

Has anyone who interviewed Phase I and II with HAL the last six months, and subsequently received an email stating that you are still under consideration, then actually been called back in for Phase III? Seems that those that are called back for Phase III are usually called back right after they complete Phase I and II. All the people that I know have heard back within days (or less than a week) after Phase I and II.

Also, anyone who has experience in this: Those of us who have been waiting for 4 to 6 months to hear back, do we get any sort of special consideration towards the end of the window? Or will they keep calling in for the interviews and selecting the top point-getters until the end of the window?

It's been a long wait and some of us have put job searches on hold because of this. HAL is a premier carrier and top choice of mine. I would have a hard time going through the recommendation/interview/class/IOE etc... at another carrier only to quit if HAL calls. Burning the bridges of friends, colleagues and company HR reps along the way.

Thanks!

captfurlough 12-22-2012 05:15 PM

Keep the faith Walter. Even if you don't hear anything and have to reapply when the window opens again in 2013.....do it. As has been said many times here, a significant number of new hires have done just that. They'll probably hire another 75 or so during the last three quarters of 2013...you'll want to be at the front end of that hiring!

I fully agree with my colleague, stick to it.. keep your resume and apps out elsewhere in the meantime, but if you get the nod at HAL, few HR types will fault you for taking the job... in the end, you have to do what's best for you. HAL is a great company and worth it, trust me, so don't give up.

I also wanted to extend my welcome to the 11 new hires, I saw the list today... it's official! I imagine you're all processing into HR right about now... Gotta be excited! Let us know how the class breaks down when you get settled in... background would be nice for those looking to apply... as well as equipment assignments.

Again, welcome aboard!

SkyBird17 12-22-2012 06:25 PM

Anyone know if there are phase III interviews planned for 2013 before they reset and open the window again? And if they open the window again does that mean guys who did phase I and II need to re-apply again? Thanks in advance! Congrats to the new 11! The future is bright for y'all!

Not sure about the first place part, wish I knew myself but as to the second part of your question you would have to reapply.

Absolutely, Welcome Aboard!!!

Hey CAT, not sure if you remember from the last bid, but weren't most of the available slots in the -76 and maybe some -17's?? I never looked to see if there was any substantial movements between aircraft. Just rememebr something about slightly too many 330 guys, and about 14 newhire slots for the 767....

In the end it doesn't matter, all 3 a/c are excellent.! Congrats

Yep. I also hear we're fat in 717 fo's. But there is something like 7 of us awarded A330 from there to consider.

Rama 12-23-2012 10:07 AM

4 717 f/o's doing upgrade training in January probably a few more in February.

right... musent forget the upgrades indeed.... I recall them saying that "inter-island bookings were down into 2013" recently though which could also account for less need for 717 FO's and crews in general..

For the new hires, if you get the choice, my advise from what I've seen out there talking to others who've done training recently is if this will be your first "Jet" and you get any say in it, try to get the 717 first... it's a lot to take on learning to fly swept wing jet, a "heavy" and international ops all at once for many, and IOE has weeded out some in the recent past, or made others sweat bullets.

My class we had a gal with no prior jet experience and she smartly bid the 717 and is doing great on it, she'll be in much better shape when she goes to the 76 or A330 down the road. Her uncle who is also a check airman on the 767 told her it was a smart choice.

captfurlough 12-23-2012 02:08 PM

I flew the 71 when I first got here, and I'm glad I did. Excellent introduction to the islands, and great practice hand flying. You won't get that on the widebodies...but you better have the hand flying skills down before moving to the widebodies. You probably won't get the chance to develop those skills in an airplane where most of the flying is strait and level for hours on end, and where only a few minutes on either end are hand flown. You may only get four landings a month....experience builds slowly. Yet stick skills are very necessary.....

Yep, I actually loom forward to the variety of captains I fly with as they each give me a different perspective on the various islands and their history and culture. Being a mainlander myself I really appreciate the introduction to the islands this is giving me. Getting more landings in the past month than in the past two years has also been a breath of fresh air.

I know the class on the 27th is full (Congrats to all), you guys hear any mention as to when the next class might be?

Shifty 12-23-2012 06:24 PM

All I want for Christmas is a Phase III! Congrats to the guys heading to class on the 27th!

If you pass Phase III, what's the process? Do they give you a class date or put you in a pool? What's the average wait time? Anyone know how many more classes are planned?

There is no pool after phase III. If you passed you are usually invited to a class with in two weeks. I believe there is one or two more classes before they re-open the window again in late spring.

Thanks! Still waiting on a Phase III call....but staying hopeful.
