There are several at K4 currently who were hired from a regional while still an FO and have no crew PIC experience.

Some have already upgraded on the 747 and are doing well.

He says the domestic narrowbody flying he would have to do is too much like work, especially if he was stuck in a Jurassic jet such as the MD88.
Of course, I didn't need to worry about someone shooting me down if I squawked the wrong code or strayed off the flight path in NYC or ORD.

Please don't take the above to mean that I think international flying is easy, I have nothing to learn, or that it's a good idea to have new hires go directly into a 777 flying into the places Kalitta goes in/out of. It can be a challenge; I am a "student pilot" always and have much to learn; and think all the new hires need a year or two of learning the operation before being turned lose around the world. But that's just my uninformed and humble opinion.
I agree with you except the Delta/United/FedEx etc. pilot has much better support when they are out kicking around the third world than their ACMI brethren. The afore mentioned pilots are almost always operating into airports at which their employer has daily or at least regularly scheduled service and professional, trained ground employees. Usually (not always) at least one member of the crew has been there before. In ACMI you may be going to someplace no one at the company, including the people who sold and planed the trip, had ever heard of 24 hours before. I don't claim that makes the crews better. We all basically come from the same gene/experience pool. It just means that there are challenges unique to ACMI flying that don't really lend themselves to inexperienced captains.

I’m not say BS, but usually insurance requirements without PIC or minimums in category require more than 1800TT.

Shoot, in the Air Force I was a small plane driver for a while who'd never left the country without babysitting. Moved over to a heavy fleet...direct to the left seat. First trip was to southeast Asia. Sure didn't feel ready for that!
