Pilot shortage... Again!
#171
AA has the most furloughees....from another poster:
"Latest DK estimate has the recalls or F/T's being done with in April 2012."
They have about 1200 furloughees now, and they estimate that all of them will have been offered recall in less than a year...this is because of the developing pilot shortage.
Lowered mins are everywhere, and higher and higher pay is being offered at organizations with contract pilots.

A pilot shortage will not truly exist (in my opinion) untill mainline companies have to park mainline aircraft due to a lack of trained and qualified crews. This is after all the regionals have already folded because of a lack of pilots, not because the mainline flying is outsourced.
I really don't see this happening.

There have been a number of pilot shortages already, some of them very severe.
And the major airlines already have paid people to go to flight school. You just aren't old enough to remember and/or haven't studied Aviation History enough to know. UAL went to high schools and HIRED kids who had completed their PPL and had a HS Diploma.

Hi Rnav,
<I went back and read some of your posts again. I think you and I actually agree. However, I just don't think there is anything to get excited about. I certainly do not think you will see airlines going to high schools to pick out students for training from 0 hours. A squeeze in pilot availablity might do one thing, force airlines to treat pilots like human beings. On second thought, probably not.>
Just look at who puts out stories regarding pilot shortages. Either some idiot at usa today or some guy that wants you to pay him for some kind of fake services.
Shortages at the FBO? Shortages at Eagle? Shortages at Scare You cargo airline? Sure.
The bottom line, if you are truly passionate about flying, go for it. If you are looking for a good career that will pay you for your time and let you off when your 20th wedding anniversary comes up, forget the airlines. They just take all your money, kick you in the gut and then laugh in your face. Facts are facts.

Single Pilot Planes
Single pilot ground controlled airliners flown by (I mean monitored by) a company trained cadet automaton is the future of aviation. Get in line now...
At one time it was unthinkable to fly a transport category plane over the age of 60 and a radio operator, navigator and flight engineer. All gone. The FO is next.

BTW, Pilotless DRONES are being used by USAF
But the people buying the tickets in the airliners are not going to buy that .....
They want a Grey haired Captain with a Young assistant as an FO, then only they get on that plane, commercial aviation works like that.....

Yup. Besides, if the travelling public could see the DoD mishap rate for drones, they wouldn't even entertain the idea of getting on an unmanned airliner. It's not a heniously high rate, but it's higher than people will accept, that's for sure.
