Engine failure?

Did you turn it off and turn it back on?

Default Great Depression?

After reading the news this morning it appears that we are entering into a second great depression. If that is the case then I don't think that we have much to discuss in regards to a pilot shortage.

Anyone notice how the "Pilot Shortages" usually last for 1 or 2 years, but the hiring droughts last 5-10 years? All the people hired during the last shortage got furloughed shortly after.

Given time, the market will make its own corrections. If you look at the cost of just getting a PPL, what does it run nowadays? Is it still a 60 hour average for getting your PPL? I know at Bowman Field here in SDF that a 172 wet plus CFI runs around $150/hour. Someone help with the math. Is it really 9K to get a PPL?

I believe that when an interested hobby pilots see how much it costs to become a pilot and then to fly on a regular basis their logic naturally leads them to doing it professionally.

The increasing costs actually serves to flood the market with more professional wannabes.

That's an interesting concept you may have something there. Except that the shear number of star eyed bushy tailed trainees is much lower than it used to be. Do you remember how many "professional" flight academies were popping up during the last rush in the 1990's? "0 hours to your dream job in 90 days at ___________ (fill in the blank) academy of professional aeronautics!"

I teach at KLOU... the hourly rate in a relatively new 172 is $174 wet/dual. Yes I tell students it's about 8-9k to get the ticket. Most wince. Back in 1990 I paid almost 3.5k,, acounting for inflation, it's really about the same. My feeling is that if 9k is too much, don't do it. Why spend a small fortune to climb into a cramped, hot aluminum capsule that could probably kill you if you make the slightest mistake?
Plenty of other entertainment avenues available for $9K.

They oughta wince. I paid 4K in 2000 @ KPDK, so it wasn't like I went to Montana to get my tickets. The inflation is out of control. It is NOT the same. People's incomes haven't increased with inflation, only costs. 3.5 to 4 in ten years, then 4k to 9k in the next 10? That's not the same at all. That's runaway inflation. The same 150/172 I used for training cost $50/$60 wet then; probably $90/110 now.

There are still ways to obtain your tickets on the cheap, but they're getting skosh. Where there's a will, there's a way around that 9K...
