UA Hiring Minimums?
#21
Well I just got another email updates.......after many more meetings our SFO Chief Pilot informed me today that they have changed their minds in a bit from the original post.....Here's the new as of 06-28-07 mins (still being kinked out)
1) Company Employees who wish to transfer mins are still TBD! (great news for me)
2) ATP Certification
3) 4-year degree (highly preferred and will probably be mandatory to be hired)
4) 1000 ME or Single Seat Fighter Jet
5) 500 Hours Turbine (highly preferred RJ time) (ref PIC or not PIC, still TBD)
Hope this helps, and I'm sure it will change more prior to the "actually posting" on united.com and I'll keep you updated!

Hi!
THe new mins seem realistic and in line with other majors.
I was NOT comparing my airline with UAL-it's not close.
What I was trying to point out, is that the hiring situation now is so far removed from when UAL last hired, it's a whole new ballgame. In 6 months, when NWA and UPS are also hiring, it's going to get a lot tougher for the recruiters than now, and in 12-24 months when EVERYONE is hiring, including FedEx, AA and USAir, it's going to be a nightmare beyond belief. It may be that UAL and everyone else will be recruiting in high schools again.
Our mins for DC-9 FOs are about 2000/1300 and one year of crew time (something structured with 2 or more in the crew). It doesn't matter if it's helo/fw/jet/recip/whatever.

PS-Glad they kept the employee thing in there-it's always a good idea to keep excellent employees in the company.

Really? This is a mischaracterization at the very least. I don't think UAL is doing great, believe me, but they're certainly not "bleeding cash." And I don't even know how you could determine DAL's cash position seeing as they just exited CH11, with all the accounting wizardry that surrounds that event. If you want to say you have a general feeling that DAL is doing better than UAL, I could go for that. Or that DAL is headed in the right direction while UAL is not, maybe so. But your "bleeding cash" statement is just not accurate.
That being said, much of the rest of your post may have some merit.

A friend, who is in the United Training Center, tells me that approximately 20-25% of the recalled pilots are accepting an assignment and actually going to class.
Air Transport World's daily electronic newsletter recently stated that NWA has admitted that a "significant" number of recent flight cancellations were due to "crew shortages". With the low number of pilots accepting recalls, the pilot shortage is only going to get worse.
I know of two carriers that have plans developed for "ab initio" training and I would not be surprised to see recruiting on college campuses very shortly. A great time to get on with the majors....but is it worth it ? Probably not in my opinion.

You sure do seem to know alot about the industry. This coming from a former mesa now scabwest pilot. Why don't you talk about your hate for alpa or you could talk about how will #uck over any pilot(ASA) for that quick skywest upgrade. Please explain more the industry to us. Do tell.

Actually my choices in airlines have been based on geography, not upgrade. I grew up near SLC, and Skywest is the hometown airline...they were there LONG before ASA or DAL. ASA just borrowed some of their flying for a while, that's all. So no I don't feel too bad about the SLC thing (but I would never, ever bid into ATL, you're more than welcome to it).
Not sure why a total jack@ss such as yourself chose this moment to pop out of the woodwork...go back to FI. You can insult me over there all you like.
