Be careful what you wish for. You see it as over staffing, but ask the old timers how often a junior piece of equipment is overstaffed. (Almost never)

My question is, why are they over staffing the right seat of the 88, everywhere? The Captains have more vacation, training, sick time, etc... but in every base they have 30 extra FO's. Are they just parking these guys rather than furlough them?

If so, MD88 FO might not be bad, if I could bid reserve, weekends off, and never touch the thing.
There are alot more fo's out on mil leave than ca's on vac at any given time. Plus it is the cheapest place to hold an overage... Just my guess?!

ACL65 - good point, but I'm wanting voluntary leave anyway. I'd rather come back ten years from now at the status quo point for last October.

But this brings up several other questions, like how long term are these displacements? On one hand I hear hope that they might be cancelled, on the other hand I hear it is a set up for furloughs (while other airlines are recalling).

Other variables are the move of the 88 fleet North. The Atlanta 88 is but a short reprieve for the inevitable. With the loads over the North Atlantic doing poorly, the NYC 7ER might not be a short term deal as well.
  • What's your best guess on the duration of these displacements? Any chance of reinstatement?
  • What is the LAX 73N flying like?
  • Does it cover just LAX, or other airports?

I'm just not a Queens NYC sort of a guy. An apartment full of aspiring model / actress types and 90 degrees is more to my liking.

Thank you very much for the intel.

Anybody else think they might be getting things ready for a combined category for the DC-9 and MD-88?

Bar I am hoping there are more guys like you in Atl than not. From what I gather, atl based guys tend to live there. Will they want to commute to NY with all the associated costs for a mere $10 per hour more? Pay protection will reduce the difference even more.

My first year on the ER has been great. I am thankful for the opportunity to fly that plane and mission. To have it the first year, the most stressful of an airline career, has been a true blessing. I guess now it is time to go to work. I will attempt to hold on to the ER but will be OK with anything that has a RD Widget on it.

Come on guys, wouldn't you rather drive to work and be home 30 mins after block in than trying to run and catch that last flight back home? :-)

They weren't at NWA when we had MD-80s (small fleet that went away in mid 90s). I would guess no.

Should I put in a MD bid for DC9 DTW yet, or is it too early?

I can tell you that the LCA meeting next month will have some very big intel in it. These meeting are designed to have the LCA and AQFO's then spread this info the line guys.
With where our most junior FO's are, a displacement like this is not to set up for furlough IMHO. They could do that today if they wanted to. It is not to say that after this AE comes out that a furlough will not happen. This recession is deepening. It will get a lot worse. IMHO and based on no fact, I feel that if this world economy keeps going this way massive furloughs are not just a possibility, but are certain.

Yes, the North Atlantic saw over a 3% drop in traffic year over year. A full press release of the Dec numbers is avail. on DeltaNet.
  • What's your best guess on the duration of these displacements? Any chance of reinstatement? No
  • What is the LAX 73N flying like?Start with a lot of all nighter. Great flying, but if you think a NYC commute would suck, try LA.
  • Does it cover just LAX, or other airports? SNA and ONT as well. No flying out of those currently on the 767.

I'm just not a Queens NYC sort of a guy. An apartment full of aspiring model / actress types and 90 degrees is more to my liking.
Aren't we all!

Thank you very much for the intel.
This is best guess!
