Well, that was my experience. I heard nothing from the company about my vacation (as a new hire I came on property after the bidding and was unaware of any process to put in my preference). Vacation popped up on my schedule (just a couple of days of it based on the prorated amount), and when I called the lady who works on vacation bidding/assignment she told me if I had contacted her before it was assigned I would have been able to give her a preference. She was very cordial, but stated since it had been put on my schedule it was too late to get it changed.

And for every person who experiences this, there are others who bid reserve on purpose. As a 2001 hire, I held a line on Express for all of three months back in '01. Been on reserve since and don't have a problem with 70 hours of pay for 40-50 hours of work. How many of those SC days was also a fly day?

I'm guessing you live in base. Reserve would be much more palatable if I lived in base, but I can't (and would never live in Memphis). 1 SC day was a fly day, but all 18 days were away from home. The 40-50 hour months aren't bad for me either, even with commuting. Under the northwest rules, reserves still got the 5 hours of pay per duty period. That made it much more likely that you would be productive and/or break guarantee. This "B" scale for reserves is retarded....
a. his accumulated credit earned in the bid period,
b. his reserve guarantee, or
c. 5:15 pay, no credit for each qualifying duty period.

If you fly 7 hours of credit on a 1 day and 3 hours on another a reserve will get 10 hours of credit, while the lineholder gets 12:15. As this piles up throughout the month you either end up working more days, or make less money. 5:15 minimum day (not dpa) is something that would benefit everyone on the next contract, but needs to be applied evenly between line and reserves.
Why are some of you so defensive of this reserve pay system? This is something that needs improving and would benefit everyone (think staffing) if fixed.

One problem is the "qualifying" part. DH only days do not count. It also should not be a lookback to make it an average. Credit should be applied as the month progresses.

Nope, I'm a commuter. As far as the "inequities" of the reserve system to a line holder, yes, it can suck. However, I hear line holders complain that they can't do "Rolling Thunder" either. If we want to change it, complaining on a webboard ain't gonna cut it. Have you made your wishes known to your council reps?

It stings being on a rotation where you're getting 3 hours while the lineholder next to you is getting 5:15.
I think we're on the same page.

I wasn't clear with my example. IF it were 2 separate 1-day trips, the line holder would get 5:15 for the 3 hr day, and 7 for the 7hr day to reach 12:15. It would be 10:30 for a 2-day trip which is why we need 5:15 min day NOT duty period average.

I agree something needs to be done about reserve pay. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, this has been an up hill battle for longer than I can remember.
