Generally, a scab is someone who crosses a picket line or flies struck work. By the Merriam-Webster definition, a scab is also someone who works on a non-Union basis for less than Union wages. (You'll get some divergent opinion if that applies to the airline industry here! )

That would put Skybus, jetBlue and Virgin America pilots in the "scab" catagory. However, I'll concede the point that the name "scab" is probably too harsh for those guys. POTENTIAL scab is probably more accurate.

Why? Because the justification these pilots use to accept employment at companies who seek to undercut Union labor is the same justification that scabs use when they cross picket lines.

So, no matter how you choose to whitewash it, if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, its a duck.

Sir my response was not about crossing a picket line. That's a big BOZO NO NO! I was respsonding to taking off from the picket line should a family crisis arise, such as a child or spouse being taken to a hospital do to an emergency, a death in the family... well common sense prevails regarding family needs and priorities without putting your loyalites about the union aside.

Several years ago I had a 777 EWR-DEN flight and when walking up to the gate I saw four CAL pilots, in uniform, hanging around and looking at me. Obvious jumpseaters.

Checked with the gate agent and I was advised that these four guys wanted to jumpseat and it was up to me which ones I took.

I went up to these guys, said I had a scab list and if their name was in the booklet there would be no accomodating them. If they weren't on the list, then the two senior guys were most welcome and to check with me in the cockpit as soon as they boarded.

At pushback I saw all four of them walking back to the terminal. Made my day.
No way! In Denver? Are you sure? Sarcasm off.

For all of the folks who argue the "I have little ones to feed" and "family comes first" I completely agree with you 110% since I have 2 little ones to feed as well.....BUT....that being said, I would NEVER stoop so low as to cross a picket line for that reason. If you have mouths to feed, you GO GET A JOB ELSEWHERE!!!! If you can't get on with an outfit thats not on strike, you get a job outside of being a pilot. The last thing you do is stab your fellow co-workers and future co-workers in the back. Like another poster said, if you can get a job as a pilot, you can get a job somewhere else to pay bills without being a scab. It then becomes a win-win situation.

I am interested as to what is the courteous way to do this. Say someone comes up and asks for a jumpseat. Do you just say, "What's your name, I need to check the SCAB list?" That would seem like that would offend a lot of people. Or do people generally not mind because you are doing a good deed by not offering a SCAB a jumpseat. Or do you check the list while they are not with you?

Thanks

Perhaps you could do is instruct the gate agent or the senior F/A that you would like to see the individuals credentials prior to entering the aircraft. You could check to see if the person’s name appears in your list and save both you and potential non-qualified jump seat rider uncomfortable situations.

I've had it done to me a couple times and I'm not even old enough to be on the list. Capatain gets your ID, says "hold on a second". Looks at the list, then says "yeah, no problem". To tell you the truth, I'm not the least bit offended. If he's doing it to me, he is doing it to everybody else and kicking off scabs in the process.

Sorry,

I thought you meant it was OK to scab based on an excuse.

Since CASS came on line, cabin jumpseaters are cleared by the CSAs. They are issued a seat at the counter. The slimy ones just go to their seat and never present credentials to the Capt. That's how the scabs and B6 boys are travelling these days.
