I've had it done to me a couple times and I'm not even old enough to be on the list. Capatain gets your ID, says "hold on a second". Looks at the list, then says "yeah, no problem". To tell you the truth, I'm not the least bit offended. If he's doing it to me, he is doing it to everybody else and kicking off scabs in the process.
So I thanked the Captain, and learned something: I figure scabbing has about a 100 year shelf life minimum.

A few years ago...
I was in MSP trying to get to work on a NWA DC-10. A reserve crew had been called and as they arrived, the Captain noticed me in the gate area and asked if I needed a ride. I said "yes please" and he happily offered the J/S. Just before I boarded, a NWA Intern arrived and TOLD the gate agent to "put him in the jumpseat." She escorted us both to the aircraft and when we got up front, the Captain (who was dealing with MX) asked the FO to deal with us. The FO quickly glanced at the intern's badge, assumed that he was a NWA pilot and told him to sit in the "comfy" jumpseat behind the left seat (the one with the great view). He then told me that I had the "plank" for the flight to SEA. For those of you who have never been on the #2 DC-10 J/S, I equate it to sitting on a 2 X 6! I didn't complain though, it was a free ride on a full plane and I was THRILLED to get on! About 30 minutes into the flight, the NWA intern proceeded to FALL ASLEEP and stayed that way until the gear came down over the SEATAC Mall! As we deplaned, the FO pulled me aside and apologized. He felt bad that he'd given the nicer of the two seats to an intern who apparently wasn't paying attention in class when J/S etiquette was covered. Oh well. At least I made it to work on time! Thanks NWA!

I seem to remember that kind of rhetoric dating back to the ‘30s in some European country.
If you were to poll the members, I think they would say that family comes first and foremost.
Does ratification of T/As by airlines include reduction of pay and termination of retirement benefits too?

It’s a mystery to me. You mentioned that people should put the needs of their union first before having kids or worrying about mouths to feed, which I think is what you said in an earlier post.

To say pilots - generally well-educated, intelligent individuals - cannot find some kind of temporary job to feed the family is ludicrous. Sell the house, sell the toys, pull the kids out of private school if you have to, but don't cross that line. You'll earn the label and everything that goes with it...for the rest of your life.

Are you kidding? Unions resort to self-help to improve pay and working conditions. That has a direct effect on the quality of life for labor families.

If by any remote chance it isn't, and this story is real, then man I got words for that NWA captain.
Mesaba "suckers" aren't taking the jobs. It was NWA pilots who allowed to grandfather 36 Avros at Mesaba. It was Northwest pilots who relaxed scope after 9/11, and Northwest pilots who allowed a regional in house carrier to form, called Compass Airlines. Supposedly, it will be staffed by furloughed NWA pilots and then off the street hires. But the way things are going, NWA might recall everyone back before the E190s really come into play. WHo knows how it will play out.
One thing is for sure, it is NOT the Mesaba guy that's f#$king over NWA mainline pilots. It's your mainline management, and your own pilot group for relaxing scope.
Put blame at the true source of it all!

My point was, and yes, you are the only one who doesn't get it, screwing your union brethren because you DECIDED to have a pack of kids and no financial security is a pretty pathetic way to conduct yourself. Then again, that is just a limp-wristed excuse anyway, like 'Pede said.
The fact that fungus like you leach your livelihood from the union's hard work right up until the moment of truth and then bail at the most selfish moment possible is just the cherry on top.
Methinks you doth protest too much. You are an ex-scab, without a doubt. Though equally certain, you somehow fail to classify yourself as such. After all, YOU had a good reason...
