Is there some data out there from the likes of FltOps, or some other snake oil seller?

Great post FloridaGator. The majors have no shortage of pilots. Neither do the regionals. The majors still have consolidation, shrinkage, and outsourcing at their disposal. The regionals have larger aircraft and reassignment of contracts at their disposal.
I keep getting told by the majors that this is the best opportunity in recent history for piots. I've heard that before. The builder of my condo told me in 2005 that I had made a fortune by simply buying the place. I'm still stuck with it, and it's worth a lot less than a fortune.
These guys (major CEO's) aren't dumb or reactive. They are planning for the retirements. It will be their way of shrinking without ****ing anyone off. They won't have to furlough. They just let the pilot ranks shrink on their own and continue to outsource larger flying to the regionals.
An I a pessimist or a realist? I hope neither. But I will print this and save it for a laugh in 10 years. Or a cry?

But it doesn't end there. The so called "outsourcee's" scope is now under attack. Republic Airways management is attempting to get scope relief from their pilot group in contract negotiations. They want to outsource the ounsourcing.
Then there is the issue of cabotage that will also be a request to keep that commerce flowing. That will require a change in federal law, but don't worry about that getting bogged down in the NPRM process. Remember how fast age 65 got pushed through the back door in congress even as it had just started the NPRM process that normally takes 3-7 years?

Most if not all of the younger and older pilots (atleast I hope) have figured out by now that giving up scope is career suicide.

surely someone must have some good data on the regional picture... how many furloughs and how's hiring... I too would love to see where all this hiring is coming from.. with a general shrinking of the number of RJ's..

Question for all the shrinking airlines snake oil salesman on here. If the majors keep shrinking, where are they going to send the capacity to? Passenger traffic is going to increase, more people are wanting to fly. Most majors have a large percentage of their pilots retiring over the next 10 years and given your sales pitch, that means 50% less flights going around the country. How are the airline managements going to convince the American population to stop flying? Sure, send it to the regional airlines is an option but who controls the levers on that right now? THE PILOTS AT THE MAJORS! So if any of you want to spread this message in a threat to other pilots I suggest you should take control of the situation with your feet and vote instead of spouting off on pilot boards without fulling thinking your words through.
I am not a shortage follower, I believe hiring at all airlines will increase some and decrease some through out my flying lifetime. Shortage is just the opposite side of the snake oil sales pitch.

it appears that English is not your strongest suit... but in a nutshell, I'll encapsulate what you are trying to say by saying the following..
"THERE WILL NEVER BE A SHORTAGE OF PILOTS FOR THE MAJOR AIRLINES"
and
"THERE WILL ONLY BE A SHORTAGE OF PILOTS WILLING TO WORK FOR $18/hr AT THE COMMUTERS (REGIONALS)"

I don't have total numbers, but i was hired at comair in nov. of 06 as sen. # 1690, I was furloghed as sen # 997 in late 09. I believe comair will have less than 500 pilots by the end of this coming year. That's 1000 jobs just from comair over the last 4 years. That flying originaly started going to pinnacle, mesaba, ASA and the like, explaining their hiring. Now gojet has been given a contract for 12 airplanes. They are scrambling to hire for coverage while ASA is looking to furlough.
