The way it was explained to me by one of the MEC officers is that the TA was annotated with the term "base pay" when it was signed and ratified but that term never made it into the final product that was printed after ratification. It was on the basis that the parties signed the TA that the arbitrator found that "base pay" was what everyone had agreed to.

MAG ALPA seems to pick their battles, rather than going on quixotic quests to make this place a career destination and/or sink the entire airline.
For example, it seems like they're compromising with the company on payrates in contract negotiations, but holding the line on the FOQA gatekeeper issue. They aren't going to push for payrates that would put the company out of business, but they are fighting the company on ludicrous stuff like company control of FOQA.

They're more pragmatic than my previous ALPA carrier. Believe me you don't want a militant union run solely by senior lifer Captains that fights the company over every little thing and never compromises on anything.
