I could have told the Air Force about his leadership skills/style 10 years ago and saved them a lot of money and embarrassment. You always hear stories about how the "good guys" always finish last in the AF & military. Finally, one of the "not so good guys" gets what he deserves.

As a side note...each one of my former squadron mates who I have told about this has been just a giddy as I have. This guy was out for himself 10 years ago, and I imagine he still was, up until the day that he was fired.

Fly safe.
I read about this guy on Baseops and he certainly seems like a giant D-bag. The military is full of em but so is every other company in life. There is good and bad in the military, unfortunetly, some of the bad is going to make it to the top. The last, worst leader (I use that term very losely with this guy) I've experienced was a TW Commodore. Absolutely horrible, sounded a lot like the guy in the article. Then his replacement, a Marine, is the exact opposite..one of the best leaders I've seen. I've served under D-bag CAG's and rock solid CAG's. Same with Commanding Officers...absolutely amazed some made it to where they are. That's life though. I'm at 16 years, 3 months and have served with some fine people, both enlisted and officers. To paint those in the military as overall bad is ignorant at best. Bad experiences are often made worse by bad attitudes and poor performance. Usually those with poor performance blame that performance on something else, like the environment around them.

Last thoughts on this thread...I was in the squadron, and deployed, when our C-130 crashed in Al Jaber. McD was indeed our CC at the time. I went to AIS a year or so after the accident, and was actually the person that sat down and explained to "KJ" what the AF was trying to do to the crew. That was on a Friday...KJ was up in Little Rock that following Monday to talk with the crewmembers. Regardless of your thoughts on what the crew could have or should have done better, the AF was using some faulty logic in their attempts to prosecute the front-enders. The most memorable quote from the hearings when the AF tried to hammer the AC was when the prosecutors had KJ on the stand and were trying to lecture him about the "intent" of 11-217. KJ replied, "look on the front page of the reg. I can tell you exactly about the intent of the reg...I wrote it".

Nothing. Like most Officers...that just crapped on those below....our XO had no spine. We had an AOM and one of our brave O3's (Works at NWA now) got up and said something. None of us dared say anything. These people would trash JO's careers at the drop of a dime. At least keep you off the flight schedule. Nope, the affair was right out in the open. They would cuddle in the back of the plane when we flew them to Japan...they even had their own tunes. Honestly, I really could of cared less (about who is doing who) - but having it open and giving her not one but two NAM's and THEN a switch to the Pilot Pipeline (we had some NFO's that wanted the same) appalling. The Doc was a member of our Squadron.
That is a failure of your communities leadership and that of your squadron - your own included (you even admitted to not even caring). Again - same situation except our XO did what he was suppose to and the company grade officers did too. No one's career was hurt and no one was grounded (except for those invovled).
The Doc is still not in the chain of command of the MO. Your flight surgeon reports directly to the CO. Still no conflict.

Having went through the FTU in the summer of 2000, when the Article 32 was going on and then assigned to that unit, I have spent much time studying that mishap, and all I can say is this: that crew was set up to fail with respect to their schedule and when I was in the desert in 2005, it hadn't changed much. In fact the flight doc suggested I might be addicted to Ambien and referred me to their paphlet which read "get into a normal sleep schedule." I had such a laugh at that I told him to email it to our schedulers, who moved us from a day line to a night line back to a day line with min crew rest routinely.

You can have all the training and experience/knowledge of the regs, but if you are too tired to react, you are too tired to react.

He was as down to earth as a guy can possibly be, and had some of the best flying skills I have ever seen in a senior officer.
I got to fly (sort of) with Norty back in 1998 in Hawaii when he was a BG. I was the CP that got bumped out of the seat so he could fly for a bit, so I got to stand up and watch. Great guy, great pilot. I remember being pretty impressed at his abilities. I kept the crew orders just in case he became "somebody." I guess he did.
