Fighter jock, trash hauler, rotor head, fuel jockey ....... the military aviator comes in many forms ....... air force, Navy, coast guard, army..... and yes, even the revered Marine. Bottom line, each military aviator has at the essence of his/her, airframe specific culture - professionalism. Those on the outside will always cast stones simply because they could never attain or maintain such a high standard - one of study, discipline, and Officership/leadership.
To fly and lead those in a time of war has been my single biggest honor, and will never be tarnished by some internet douche on the sidelines that never has, was, or will be. I am continually filled with comfort when some internet clown runs his "suck" negatively toward those that have held those high standards. It always makes me smile, knowing that said douche, has hit the pinnacle achievement of his life, flying the red-eye out of SFO. Laughable.
To my brothers and sisters - long live those brave few. To the rest of you -continue to dream of our adventure and peril.

Guys I just read through all of these post and quite frankly am surprised how many people are defending the assigners of the call sign.
I remember when the first female pilot in our squadron was to get her new callsign. The Wing Commander showed up to "supervise", I remember seeing the SQ/DO say to the WG/CC, "do you think their SA is that low".
Well, apparently in the squadron in question, their SA was that low. The person we are talking about would never say whether he was straight or gay, regardless as to which way he leaned, his lack of committal would lead most aviators to conclude he was gay.
In the world we live in today, why in the world would a SQ/CC allow a call sign of this nature, for someone who might be gay.
Seriously, if you just flew a sortie with someone who had such low SA, how would the debrief go. It doesn't surprise me they got sacked.
Now, like always happens, one persons screw-up will result in everyone being punished.

There were lots of names tossed around, it seems. Most of them seemed to imply an unnatural obsession with the Dallas Cowboys. That seems to be true as the ensign in question has even posed for media pictures wearing a Cowboy's shirt. People with extreme obsessions tend to get those obsessions made fun of pretty harshly via a list of potential names, whether the obsession be with a group of men (in this case the Dallas Cowboys), excessive attention paid to their own hair, addiction to computers, a love of very large women, or whatever.
Without hearing both sides of the story (remember we've only heard the ensign's side of the story through the filter of the media), I won't assume that the name was given because they thought anything regarding this guy's orientation. Believe it or not, lots of namings have suggestions thrown out there that look a lot like the names on this guy's list. No one thinks those other guys are gay, so I won't assume anyone thought this guy was actually gay. They may have, but that would assume facts not in evidence at this point. The ensign drew his conclusions and seemingly bases his accusation solely on the names on that board (based on his statements in the Navy Times interview). It might look bad through a soda straw, but zoom out a bit and it might look much different. Remember, his failure to answer the question about his orientation (that some are holding up as proof positive he's gay) happened AFTER the fact here. It was a question from the media, not a question from the Navy. So to say that the pilots would view that as a reason to believe he is gay you have to ignore a bit of the chronology here.
To say that these guys were low on SA may or may not be true. It's easy to make assumptions or draw inferences because of the (possibly selective or out of context) facts released by this one individual. What is for sure true is that all of us in the peanut gallery are low on SA on this particular incident because we've only heard one side of the story.
